Authentication

Cal. 3132 through the exhibition caseback is the movement check; dial and bezel originality matter more than scarcity.

Known issues in the market
  • Sellers occasionally present the Cellini Time as a rare find; production volumes were modest but not scarce.
  • Service records are worth requesting given the dress-watch context and often limited use history.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 50505 Cellini Time is Rolex's dress watch: 18ct white gold, domed dial, Cal. 3132 with double parachrom hairspring, and a solid caseback. It is the most conventional complication in the Cellini family. The fluted bezel, domed sapphire, and slim case make it easily distinguished from the Oyster family.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replica Cellini examples using Oyster-family cases

  • The Cellini case profile is distinctly slim; an Oyster-derived case will be noticeably thicker at the mid-case
  • Oyster-style crown guards around the winding crown are incorrect on the Cellini
  • Replicas often skip the domed sapphire crystal, using a flat or only slightly curved sapphire instead

The Cellini is less reproduced than the Oyster family, which does not mean examples are safer to buy sight-unseen.

LOW

Aftermarket strap on genuine cases

  • Non-original straps will lack the factory fold clasp in white gold with the Rolex crown
  • Third-party alligator straps may have incorrect lug width or strap taper

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2014 to presentAvailable in white, black, and silver dials, all with a characteristic dome and Rolex's "chevron" guilloche pattern on some variants. Applied white gold indexes.
  • Domed dial profile; the crystal rises well above the bezel level
  • White gold applied indexes without lume fill (dress watch; no luminous material)
  • "CELLINI" in larger text than the Oyster family uses for model names
  • Alligator leather strap, not an Oyster or President bracelet

Service part flags

Case

Original: The Cellini case has a slimmer profile than any Oyster family reference and uses a double-domed sapphire crystal. The fluted white gold bezel is decorative and fixed (does not rotate).

Replacement tells
  • Case that is thicker at the midcase than the Cellini profile allows; the Cellini is notably slim
  • Bezel that rotates; the Cellini bezel is fixed
  • Crown at 3 o'clock (correct) in an oversized or incorrect Oyster-style crown guard design; the Cellini has a simple tube-style crown housing
Strap

Original: Brown or black alligator leather strap with an 18ct white gold folding clasp bearing the Rolex crown. The strap has a specific taper.

Replacement tells
  • Aftermarket leather straps that lack the gold clasp
  • Crocodile or non-alligator leather passed as original
  • Clasp in steel rather than white gold

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to present
  • Solid white gold caseback -- NO exhibition window; the Cellini has a solid caseback across the entire current lineup
  • Engraved: ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL CELLINI
  • Rolex crown at center
  • Reference 50505 and serial between the lugs

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 3132 is the correct movement. It uses a double Parachrom (blue) hairspring for magnetic and shock resistance. If service documentation lists Cal. 3135, Cal. 3235, or any other reference, the movement has been replaced.
  • The Cellini movement is smaller and thinner than the Oyster family calibers; if a movement appears oversized when the watch is opened, it is incorrect.
  • No date function: if any date display exists in the movement or dial, the combination is wrong for this reference.
