The Master Ultra Thin houses Cal. 849, a manually wound movement at 1.85mm thin, making the complete watch 7.6mm deep. The thinness is the defining characteristic and the first thing to verify on any presented example.

Original: The case is 38mm in diameter and 7.6mm total thickness (no crystal). This is the defining measurement of the Master Ultra Thin. The case flanks are brushed with a subtle taper from top to bottom.

Original: Manual-wind movement at 1.85mm total height. Visible through the caseback. The architecture has a distinctive flat profile with a large going barrel taking up the majority of the movement footprint.

  • Rotor visible through caseback -- Cal. 849 is manual-wind with no rotor whatsoever
  • Movement height inconsistent with the ultra-thin case profile
  • Finishing that shows machine marks on the bridges -- JLC uses perlage (circular graining) on the plate and cotes de Geneve on the bridges

  • Cal. 849 winds exclusively through the crown. Any resistance, roughness, or gritty feel during winding suggests a dry or worn mainspring.
  • Power reserve is 40 hours. A watch that stops before 35 hours needs service.
  • Beat rate is 28,800 vph (4Hz). The seconds hand advances in quick, consistent 1/8-second steps. Any irregular stepping or sluggishness in the seconds hand indicates regulation work needed.
  • The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback. The plate should show uniform perlage and the bridges cotes de Geneve in the correct parallel orientation. No service marks should be visible on the finishing.
