Authentication

The Mark XV uses an ETA 2892-A2 base rather than an in-house movement; this must be disclosed and should be reflected in pricing.

Known issues in the market
  • Cal. 37524 is ETA 2892-A2 based; later IWC Mark references use in-house Cal. 30110. Movement swap between the two generations is rare but possible.
  • The ETA base is not inferior but the architecture differs significantly; ensure the stated movement matches what is visible through the caseback.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather straps are replaced frequently on pilot watches; original IWC strap with IWC buckle is preferred.
  • Cal. 37524 service is straightforward as an ETA base; any competent watchmaker can service it, which also means it has been serviced more often.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Mark XV (produced 1999 to 2005) is the generation before the Mark XVI and XVII, using the ETA 2892-A2 based Cal. 37524. It is a clean, no-date pilot watch that often gets overlooked by collectors who focus on the newer Mark generations. Dial legibility is the whole point of this watch; any printing quality issue is immediately apparent.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Mark XV is infrequently reproduced due to its modest secondary market price relative to the Portugieser and Big Pilot families.

  • Any replica would likely show incorrect Arabic numeral proportions on the dial
  • Soft iron inner case is a straightforward tell: open the caseback and verify the anti-magnetic cage is present

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1999 to 2005Black dial with large Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9. Luminous applied baton indexes at other positions. Simple hour and minute hands with Superluminova fill.
  • Large Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 with luminous fill
  • Applied baton indexes at other positions with matching lume
  • No date window -- the Mark XV is a pure three-hand watch
  • "IWC" and "SCHAFFHAUSEN" above and below 6 o'clock; "PILOT'S WATCH" and "MARK XV" text
  • Mineral crystal (not sapphire) on early examples; later production moved to sapphire

Service part flags

Crystal

Original: Early Mark XV used a mineral crystal; later production switched to a flat sapphire crystal. The IWC logo does not appear on the crystal itself for this generation.

Replacement tells
  • A domed sapphire crystal on a stated early Mark XV; the profile should be flat
  • Aftermarket crystals that show a different refractive quality than the factory piece
Movement

Original: Cal. 37524, based on the ETA 2892-A2, with a Pellaton winding mechanism added by IWC. The movement is regulated and decorated to IWC specification.

Replacement tells
  • A bare ETA 2892-A2 without the Pellaton addmodule or IWC finishing; any service receipt should note Cal. 37524 specifically
  • A cal. from the later Mark generations (Cal. 30110 for Mark XVI) fitted into the Mark XV case; the movement height may differ

Case back markings

toggle
1999 to 2005
  • Solid steel caseback with IWC engraved text
  • Engraved: IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN
  • Reference number (3253xx) and serial number engraved
  • Soft iron inner case visible as a domed disc when caseback is opened; this is the anti-magnetic cage, not a movement cover

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 37524 is based on ETA 2892-A2 with a Pellaton bidirectional winding system. The Pellaton mechanism uses pawls and a hub wheel; it is more complex than the standard ETA rotor system and should be identifiable in a movement photo.
  • The movement runs at 28,800 bph; a different beat rate indicates either a different caliber or a timing alteration.
  • IWC-finished movements have the IWC hallmark on the rotor; a plain ETA rotor without IWC decoration indicates the movement was serviced with a generic replacement part.
