The square-cased chronograph Steve McQueen wore in Le Mans in 1970; the association made it the most recognized Heuer reference outside the Carrera.

Authentication

The Monaco crown is on the left side by design; verify the dial "Heuer" font under magnification, as re-dials are common on this reference.

Known issues in the market
  • The left-side crown is an original design feature, not a defect; any Monaco with a right-side crown has been modified.
  • The "Heuer" font on the blue dial is the re-dial tell; inconsistent lettering is non-genuine or re-printed.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Monaco ref. 1133B is the original 1969 square-case chronograph with the crown on the left side. The left-side crown is non-negotiable. Any Monaco with a crown on the right is either a different reference or an incorrect example.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

The Monaco is one of the most recognized vintage chronograph designs, partly through its association with Steve McQueen, and attracts significant reproduction and reconstruction activity.

  • Crown on the right side (3 o'clock) is the clearest single indicator that the watch is not a 1133B; replicas and reconstructions frequently get this wrong
  • Square case corners on replicas are either too sharp or too rounded; the genuine 1133B has a specific bevel geometry at each corner
  • Calibre 11 has a distinctive movement architecture (micro-rotor visible through exhibition caseback); any movement without this micro-rotor layout is incorrect
  • Blue dial shade on replicas is typically too saturated or too dark; compare against documented examples in natural light

Request independent authentication from a Heuer-specialist or established vintage dealer before purchase. The Monaco is among the most frequently misrepresented references in the vintage chronograph market. Patina consistency, crown position, and Calibre 11 movement architecture are the three non-negotiable checks.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1969 to 1975Square 39mm steel case. Blue or grey dial (1133B is the blue-dial reference; 1133G is grey). White subdials. "HEUER" in block letters at 12. "MONACO" below. Calibre 11 movement. Date at 3.
  • Crown is on the LEFT side of the case (at 9 o'clock position); this is the single most important identifier
  • Square case with fine brushed finish on the flanks and polished bevels at the corners
  • "HEUER MONACO" on dial; "AUTOMATIC" below the subdials confirming the self-winding movement
  • Blue dial on the 1133B; correct shade is a mid-blue, not royal blue or navy

Service part flags

toggle
Crown

Original: Heuer-signed crown at 9 o'clock (left side); push-pull operation.

Replacement tells
  • Crown on the right side (3 o'clock) means either a different reference or an incorrect reconstruction
  • Unsigned crown is a service replacement; very common on examples that have been serviced outside Heuer/TAG network
Dial

Original: Mid-blue dial with white printed registers; age should produce slight fading at register boundaries and possible champagne toning at the chapter ring.

Replacement tells
  • Royal blue or navy dial is the wrong shade for 1133B; inspect in natural daylight
  • Uniform, bright blue with no aging on a 55-year-old dial is suspicious
  • Reprint dial text shows raised or recessed printing under loupe
Pusher at 2 o'clock

Original: Start/stop pusher is at 2 o'clock (right side, upper); reset pusher is at the left lower position or integrated differently depending on production.

Replacement tells
  • Pushers at the wrong positions indicate case modification or an incorrect case

Case back markings

toggle
1969 to 1975
  • Snap-fit caseback on most production
  • "HEUER" and "MONACO" and reference number
  • Serial number; cross-reference with Calibre 11 production records
  • "Swiss Made"; "Water Resistant" if claimed, though the square case limits sealing
  • Caseback wear should match overall case condition

Movement tells

toggle
  • Movement is Calibre 11: a modified Buren 1281 micro-rotor base with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module on top.
  • The Calibre 11 winds from the left side of the movement (micro-rotor); turning the crown clockwise winds the watch. Correct.
  • The micro-rotor is smaller than a full rotor; the winding sound is softer and takes longer to fully wind from a flat state.
  • Chronograph function: start/stop at 2 o'clock, reset at the lower pusher. Column-wheel actuation is crisp when the movement is in good condition.
  • After service, confirm the date wheel advances fully at midnight; the Calibre 11 date mechanism is known to advance partially if the date corrector is worn.
  • Calibre 11 runs at 19,800 vph; faster than Valjoux 72 but slower than modern 28,800 vph movements.
