Authentication

Both coupled balance wheels must oscillate at the same frequency; a stopped or erratic second balance indicates a serious fault.

Known issues in the market
  • Dual balance wheels are the identity marker; verify both are oscillating before purchase.
  • Pieces are extremely rare; establish seller provenance directly with Greubel Forsey.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Double Balancier has two balance wheels connected by a differential, both visible from the dial side. The twin-oscillator architecture is immediately recognizable and has no credible reproduction.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No credible mechanical reproduction of the Double Balancier exists.

  • Single balance wheel replacing the twin-oscillator system
  • Decorative second wheel that does not oscillate independently

As with all Greubel Forsey pieces, provenance documentation and direct brand verification are the authentication path. The mechanical architecture itself is not reproducible at the current state of the replica market.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2019 to presentMulti-layer dial with two balance wheels at approximately 10 and 4 o'clock positions; a differential connects them at the center; power reserve indicator; white gold or platinum case; leather strap.
  • Two distinct balance wheels visible simultaneously from the dial side
  • Differential gear mechanism visible between the two oscillators at the center of the movement
  • Both balance wheels oscillate at their own rates; observe for 10 seconds to confirm both are moving
  • No tourbillon cage: the Double Balancier is a non-tourbillon complication

Service part flags

toggle
Dual balance wheel system

Original: Two balance wheels in separate oscillating trains, combined through a differential to average their output; each wheel is visible from the dial.

Replacement tells
  • Only one balance wheel visible: not the Double Balancier
  • Second balance wheel is decorative (does not oscillate independently)
  • Both wheels oscillate at exactly the same rate and phase with no variation: suggests a single drive train powering a cosmetic twin display
Case material

Original: White gold 18k or platinum; no titanium or steel variants of the Double Balancier.

Replacement tells
  • Magnetic response (steel)
  • Case material inconsistent with white gold or platinum weight and finish

Case back markings

toggle
2019 to present
  • Sapphire caseback showing the Double Balancier movement from rear
  • "GREUBEL FORSEY" on movement plate
  • "DOUBLE BALANCIER" designation on bridge or plate
  • White gold or platinum case ring with reference and serial

Movement tells

toggle
  • Observe both balance wheels for 10 seconds: each should oscillate continuously and independently at the stated frequency.
  • The differential connection between the two wheels is the mechanical core of the system; it should be visible between the two oscillators and show the gear linkage that combines their regulation output.
  • Greubel Forsey production records confirm serial numbers; given approximately 100 to 150 total watches per year across all references, the Double Balancier production volume is very small.
