Authentication

The curved case is the definitive authentication point; replicas have less wrist curvature and a visible step at the case sides.

Known issues in the market
  • Replica Tank Americaine with a case that does not curve to follow the wrist; the curve is gentle but continuous and hard to reproduce.
  • Lug design on fakes that is angular rather than the flowing integrated lug of the genuine Americaine.
  • Dial printing with wrong Cartier typeface or inconsistent Roman numeral stroke width.
  • Earlier reference code confusion; W2609256 is a specific reference and earlier codes (pre-2004) differ.
  • Solid caseback on genuine W2609256; any display caseback on this reference is not original.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather straps are the most commonly replaced component; Cartier-issued straps have Cartier markings on buckle and underside.
  • ETA 2671 service is straightforward; service records from a Cartier authorized watchmaker support authenticity.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Tank Américaine is identified by its curved case: unlike the flat Tank Louis Cartier or Tank Solo, the Américaine curves to follow the wrist. This curvature means the case appears rectangular from above but shows a pronounced arc from the side. The curved case profile and the wide, curved bracelet are the primary authentication checkpoints.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

The Tank Américaine attracts moderate reproduction volume. The curved case is harder to replicate correctly than a flat Tank variant.

  • Case that is flat rather than curved when viewed from the side -- immediate disqualifier
  • Bracelet that is flat at the case junction rather than matching the case curvature
  • Roman numerals in incorrect typeface weight, the same check as any Cartier Roman numeral dial
  • Crown at 3 o'clock rather than the correct 9 o'clock position for this reference

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2000s to present (W2609256, large steel, quartz)White or silver dial with Roman numerals, blued sword hands, date window. Wider proportions than the LC or Solo.
  • Curved case: viewed from the side, the case has a pronounced curve to follow the wrist arc; flat from the front when worn
  • Wider proportions than the Tank LC or Tank Normale -- the Américaine is the widest of the rectangular Tank variants
  • Crown at 9 o'clock with cabochon sapphire
  • "Tank Américaine" text on the dial where the model name appears
  • Date window between the III and IIII on the right side of the dial
  • Bracelet curves to match the case arc -- the bracelet is not flat; it follows the same curvature

Service part flags

toggle
Curved case (Américaine profile)

Original: The Américaine case curvature is an intentional design feature. Viewed from the side, the case describes a gentle arc. The brancards (side rails) follow this curve. The caseback is curved to match.

Replacement tells
  • A flat caseback on a stated Américaine -- the caseback should share the curve of the case
  • Case that does not show the characteristic arc when viewed from the side; this would indicate a different Tank variant
  • Brancards that are straight rather than following the curved case profile
Curved bracelet

Original: The Américaine bracelet is curved at the case end to follow the case arc. The bracelet links at the case-end are angled or curved; they are not straight links like a flat-case bracelet.

Replacement tells
  • Flat bracelet attached to a curved Américaine case -- this mismatch is visible from the side
  • End links that do not curve smoothly with the case junction

Case back markings

toggle
2000s to present
  • Curved solid caseback with reference W2609256 and serial number
  • "CARTIER", "ACIER", water resistance
  • Quartz movement designation on documentation
  • "Swiss Made"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Quartz movement; battery replacement is the primary maintenance item. The curved case requires careful caseback removal to avoid scratching the curved surfaces.
