UR-105 TA Tungsten Armor

The UR-105 TA is Urwerk's most overtly armored expression of the wandering hour concept, cased in tungsten with an angular shell that looks pulled from a military vehicle. Beneath the brutal exterior is one of the more coherent mechanical ideas in independent watchmaking: three satellites, each carrying four hour numerals, orbit the dial and pass over a printed minute track to tell time. It is strange, specific, and completely committed to its own logic.

What it is

Urwerk introduced the UR-105 family in 2011 as a more compact wandering hour platform, trimming the case to 40mm while keeping the satellite complication that defines the brand. The Tungsten Armor variant arrived in 2015 and ran through 2018, distinguished by its segmented tungsten shell plates bolted over the main steel case body. Urwerk paired the display with the AMC (Automatic Motor Control) system, a rotor-mounted microrotor governor that reads wrist activity and automatically switches between three winding rates to prevent over-winding and keep the mainspring optimally loaded.

The TA designation has become the most visually striking reference within the 105 lineage, which also included the 105 M (mother of pearl), the 105 C, and the standard steel variants. Production numbers were small across all 105 references, and the TA was never catalogued at high volume.

Buying notes

The wandering hour display requires careful servicing by a technician who understands the satellite mechanism; a poorly executed service can damage the delicate carrier arms or misalign the hour discs. Tungsten is extremely hard and brittle compared to steel, so case damage from a hard knock can crack or chip an armor plate rather than dent it, and replacement panels are not available through standard channels. The AMC governor is an additional complexity point: if the watch has been sitting unworn for years, confirm the governor is functioning correctly before assuming the movement is healthy.

Dial and hand variants exist within the 105 family, so photograph all details and verify the reference matches the seller's documentation before purchase. Urwerk is generally good about service support for current and recent discontinued references, but confirm parts availability directly with the manufacture for a piece this age before committing.

Market read

The UR-105 TA trades in a narrow collector band. Prices in recent secondary market transactions have settled between roughly $35,000 and $55,000 USD depending on condition, completeness of box and papers, and whether the tungsten armor plates show wear. Full set examples in excellent condition push toward the top of that range.

Demand is steady among independent watch collectors but thin, so liquidity is slower than a comparable Patek or AP reference at the same price point.

Service expectations

The UR-105 TA runs on the Urwerk caliber UR 5.03, a proprietary movement with the AMC winding module integrated into the rotor assembly. Service should go to Urwerk directly in Geneva or to an independent watchmaker with documented Urwerk experience; the satellite mechanism and AMC governor are not routine complications for a general watchmaker.
