The Series 4 uses an English lever escapement rather than co-axial; the English lever architecture through the caseback is the correct escapement for this earlier RWS platform.

Known issues in the market
  • The English lever is a precision-adjusted modification of the traditional Swiss lever; it is correct for Series 4 and should not be flagged as non-genuine.
  • Series 4 is the earliest RWS platform; verify the escapement type matches the correct series before purchase.

The Series 4 is Roger Smith's cushion-case reference: a 38mm cushion-shaped case in steel or white gold with a co-axial-inspired English lever escapement and small seconds. Architecturally distinct from the round Series; provenance from the workshop is mandatory.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No known replica. The cushion case, Isle of Man manufacture, and English lever escapement combination cannot be plausibly reproduced.

  • A round case means the watch is a different Series
  • Any standard Swiss lever escapement through the caseback disqualifies a claimed Series 4

The Series 4 has the longest production history of any Roger Smith reference; earlier serial numbers (pre-2015) may have accumulated significant wrist time. Service history is critical.

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2006 to presentSilver or white dial with Roman numerals and blued hands. Small seconds at 6 o'clock. The cushion case is the primary visual identifier: four rounded corners on a square-ish case body.
  • Cushion case profile: rounded corners, wider than it is tall in plan view

  • "Series 4" designation on documentation
  • Co-axial-inspired English lever escapement through caseback
  • Steel or white gold only

Case profile

Original: The cushion case is machined to a specific geometry. The four rounded corners have a consistent radius; the case flanks are straight between them. Any case with irregular geometry has been altered or is not genuine.

Replacement tells
  • Case with uneven corner radii
  • Polished-over lug surfaces that have lost the original geometry

Case back markings

2006 to present
  • Individual serial number
  • "Roger W. Smith Series 4"
  • "Made in Isle of Man"
  • ACIER or 750WG material designation

Movement tells

toggle
  • The Series 4 uses an English lever escapement inspired by the Daniels tradition but distinct from the co-axial; it should be confirmed through the caseback.
  • Movement finishing standards are identical to all other Series: hand-filed chamfers, polished bevels, flat-polished plates.
  • The Series 4 has been produced since 2006; earlier examples may be due for their first service. Ask for the service history.
