The 5200A Gondolo 8 Days in steel is a technically interesting piece with an unusual rectangular case and 8-day manual-wind movement; secondary demand is modest but consistent from collectors who want unusual Patek references.

The 8-day power reserve should show increasing winding resistance through the full range; test winding feel before purchase.

Known issues in the market
  • Winding resistance that plateaus early or feels identical throughout the full winding range may indicate a mainspring issue.
  • The rectangular Gondolo case shape is harder to fake; the lug-to-case transition is specific to the Gondolo line.

Last reviewed June 2026

The 5200A is a rectangular Art Deco Gondolo with an 8-day power reserve and a large power reserve indicator. The rectangular case form, vertical orientation, and power reserve sector are the defining visual identifiers distinct from all other Patek references.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Replica rectangular dress watches in the Art Deco form factor; the 5200A is a niche reference with limited replica market pressure.

  • Round or cushion case rather than the correct rectangular Gondolo form
  • Power reserve indicator calibrated to fewer than 8 days
  • Roman numerals with inconsistent spacing or stroke weight under magnification
  • Caseback without the Calatrava cross in relief

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2007 to present (standard production)Steel rectangular case, black lacquer dial, large power reserve indicator, and Roman numeral chapter ring.
  • Rectangular case profile -- distinctly different from all round Calatrava and Nautilus references
  • Black lacquer dial with painted Roman numeral chapter ring
  • Large power reserve sector at 12 o'clock running from 0 to 8 (days)
  • "Patek Philippe" text below the power reserve sector
  • Blued steel leaf hands
  • No date function

Service part flags

Power reserve indicator

Original: Sector arc at 12 o'clock running from 0 to 8 days. The hand moves continuously from 8 to 0 as the mainspring unwinds. At full wind it reads 8; at the end of 8 days it reads 0.

Replacement tells
  • Power reserve that reads correctly for fewer than 8 days from full wind -- worn mainspring or barrel
  • Power reserve hand that moves in jumps rather than a continuous sweep
  • Sector arc without the correct 0-to-8 calibration markings
Case shape

Original: Rectangular case with pronounced Art Deco proportions -- taller than wide, with stepped lugs. The case shape is specific to the Gondolo family and has no equivalent in round Patek references.

Replacement tells
  • Round or cushion case -- a non-rectangular case is a different Patek reference entirely
  • Rectangular case without the correct Gondolo stepped lug profile
Dial

Original: Black lacquer with painted Roman numerals. The lacquer has a high-gloss depth distinct from matte finishes. Roman numerals should be precisely formed and evenly spaced.

Replacement tells
  • Matte black rather than high-gloss lacquer
  • Roman numerals with inconsistent spacing or varying stroke width
  • Dial with printed "Patek Philippe" text rather than applied or incised in correct typeface

Case back markings

toggle
2007 to present
  • Solid caseback with Patek engravings -- no exhibition window on the 5200A
  • "Patek Philippe & Co Geneve" and Calatrava cross in relief
  • Reference 5200A-001 and serial number on the case flank
  • Stainless steel -- no precious metal hallmark
  • Cal. 28-20 REC 8J must be verified by a watchmaker at service

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 28-20 REC 8J is a manual-wind movement with 8-day power reserve via a large mainspring barrel. The extended power reserve is achieved through a large barrel and reduced gear train, not through multiple barrels.
  • Manual wind at full capacity (8 days) should feel firmer than at the 4-day point. A consistent soft feel throughout the wind range indicates a worn mainspring.
  • No date, no automatic winding. The 5200A is a time-only watch with power reserve indication only.
  • Gyromax balance wheel with four gold adjustment weights and Geneva Seal finishing on all movement bridges.
  • The solid caseback requires watchmaker tools to open. Any caseback with forced-entry marks or a damaged gasket seat indicates improper prior opening.
