Authentication

The flyback reset must be clean and instant; any hesitation on the lower pusher indicates service need for a movement that deserves factory-level care.

Known issues in the market
  • Flyback reset hesitation indicates service need; the CH 29-535 PS should be serviced only by Patek or a Patek-certified watchmaker.
  • The manual-wind architecture means the crown feel is the daily interaction; verify smooth winding and hand-setting operation.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 5172G is a white gold two-register manual-wind chronograph with a pulsometer scale on the dial bezel area. It references the aesthetic of Patek's vintage chronographs from the 1940s-1960s. Cal. CH 29-535 PS is the correct column-wheel chronograph movement.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replica white gold Calatrava chronograph watches with a pulsometer dial, often using cam-actuated movements rather than the correct column-wheel architecture.

  • Heavy or imprecise pusher feel indicating a cam-actuated mechanism rather than a column wheel
  • Column wheel absent through the exhibition caseback -- no star-shaped ratchet wheel visible in the movement layout
  • Pulsometer scale with inconsistent printing density or incorrect red color
  • Exhibition caseback showing an obviously generic movement architecture rather than Cal. CH 29-535 PS

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2019 to present (standard production)White gold Calatrava case, ivory pulsometer dial with two registers and outer tachymeter/pulsometer scale.
  • Ivory lacquer main dial with applied Arabic numerals at the hours
  • Pulsometer scale on the outer chapter ring printed in red
  • Two sub-registers: continuous seconds at 3 o'clock, 30-minute chronograph counter at 9 o'clock
  • "Patek Philippe" and "Geneve" applied text above 6
  • Blued steel chronograph and running hands
  • Two chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock

Service part flags

Pulsometer scale

Original: Printed pulsometer scale in red on the outer chapter ring of the dial. The scale is calibrated for counting 15 or 30 beats. The printing should be sharp and uniform around the full 360 degrees.

Replacement tells
  • Scale printing that fades or shows uneven ink density in any segment
  • Red color that appears orange or pink rather than the correct red used in Patek production
  • Scale graduation numbers with incorrect typeface or inconsistent size
Chronograph hands

Original: Blued steel central chronograph seconds hand and separate blued steel pusher hands. The blue is thermally achieved and shows the characteristic steel-blue tone.

Replacement tells
  • Chronograph hands in black rather than blued steel blue
  • Synthetic blue coating without correct thermal gradation
  • Central chronograph hand tip profile inconsistent with known Patek 5172G examples
Pushers

Original: Two round pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock integrated into the Calatrava case. Pusher action is light and precise due to the column-wheel mechanism.

Replacement tells
  • Heavy or clunky pusher feel -- the column wheel chronograph should have a light, decisive action
  • Pushers at positions other than 2 and 4 o'clock

Case back markings

toggle
2019 to present
  • Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. CH 29-535 PS manual-wind column-wheel chronograph movement
  • Column wheel visible as a star-shaped ratchet wheel in the movement architecture
  • "Patek Philippe" on the movement plate
  • Reference 5172G-001 and serial number on the case flank
  • 18K white gold hallmark

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. CH 29-535 PS is a manual-wind column-wheel flyback chronograph. The column wheel produces a light, precise pusher feel distinctly different from the heavier feel of cam-actuated chronograph mechanisms.
  • The flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted with a single press of the lower pusher at 4 o'clock, rather than requiring separate stop-reset-start operations.
  • Column wheel is visible through the exhibition caseback as a star-shaped ratchet wheel. Its presence is the definitive indicator of a genuine Cal. CH 29-535 PS vs. a cam-actuated replacement.
  • Gyromax balance wheel with four gold adjustment weights and Geneva Seal finishing standards on all bridges.
  • Manual wind power reserve is approximately 65 hours. A watch stopping before 50 hours from full wind indicates a mainspring or barrel service requirement.
