Current production Speedmaster Professional is less frequently faked outright, but service hand swaps and dial alterations are very common in the used market.

Known issues in the market
  • Service hands from Omega's service network are correct parts but have a visibly different lume fill than period-original hands, affecting collector presentation.

Current-generation Speedmaster Professional uses Cal. 3861 with Co-Axial escapement. The primary authentication concerns are service hand swaps (correct Omega parts but visually distinguishable from originals) and distinguishing this reference from other Speedmaster variants.

Hands

Original: Alpha-style hour and minute hands with ivory-toned lume on applied metal carriers. The lume carrier sits in the hand cavity. Original Omega factory hands have a specific lume tone that develops a cream character with age. Note: the current Cal. 3861 generation (ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001) is a production watch, not a vintage piece. "Tropical dial" aging tells apply exclusively to pre-1988 Speedmaster references with tritium lume -- the vintage 145.012 and 145.022 references. Any claim of "tropical" aging on a current Cal. 3861 example should be treated with skepticism; synthetic Super-LumiNova does not age the same way tritium does.

Replacement tells
  • Service hands from Omega's service network are correct Omega parts but the lume fill is Super-LumiNova (brighter white), creating a mismatch against period-correct lume on an older example
  • Service hands on a stated original example may have slightly different proportions from factory-original hands depending on which service generation parts are used
  • Sword seconds hand profile on the central chronograph hand: the sword shape is specific and service replacements are sometimes slightly different in tip geometry
Crystal

Original: Hesalite (acrylic/plexiglass) crystal on the standard .001 reference. Hesalite is plastic, scratches easily with normal wear, and has a slightly warmer and less cold optical quality than sapphire -- sapphire reads as optically colder and clearer. The canonical Speedmaster Professional has hesalite on the front crystal as its defining specification; a sapphire front crystal is incorrect for the .001 reference. The sapphire caseback is standard on the current Cal. 3861 generation but a sapphire front is always wrong for the Professional in this configuration. The .002 "Sapphire Sandwich" variant uses sapphire front and back and is a separate reference.

Replacement tells
  • Sapphire front crystal on a stated standard .001 (hesalite-specification) reference -- the two materials are distinguishable by hardness test (a steel tool will not scratch genuine sapphire; hesalite scratches easily) and by the optical warmth difference
  • Crystal with no micro-scratches on a watch with documented heavy use history may indicate a fresh hesalite replacement
  • Hesalite clarity: original Omega hesalite has a specific optical warmth; aftermarket acrylic crystals can look subtly different in refractive quality

  • Cal. 3861 is METAS-certified as a Master Chronometer -- resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. A demagnetization test is a standard way to verify the METAS claim.
  • Co-Axial escapement: the escape wheel should be visible under magnification as a three-wheel co-axial design with silicon escape wheel (the silicon component has a distinctive look compared to metal).
  • Free-sprung balance with silicon Spirate system hairspring. The silicon hairspring appears a deep violet-blue color under magnification.
  • Cal. 3861 runs at 28,800bph (8 beats per second). The seconds hand advances with 8 micro-steps per second -- perceptible under close observation as a very smooth but stepped sweep.
  • If the caseback shows Cal. 1861 (the predecessor), the watch is an earlier generation and should not be sold as a Cal. 3861 reference.
