Authentication

Big Pilot cases are widely replicated; working perpetual calendars are not. On this reference the calendar itself is the strongest authentication tool you have.

Known issues in the market
  • Replica Big Pilots are usually built around a plain automatic with printed or non-functioning subdials. A perpetual calendar module that actually tracks month lengths and leap years is expensive to fake and rarely attempted.
  • The Big Pilot name spans several very different watches. The 43mm and 46mm three-hand models share the look and none of the complication, so confirm you are being offered the perpetual.
  • ProSet is IWC’s name for the single-crown setting system introduced in 2025. Earlier Big Pilot perpetuals set their calendar through case-flank correctors, which is a straightforward way to tell the generations apart.
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag
dialCalendar layoutFour subdials, a four-digit year display at the 7 to 8 position, and the Double Moon showing both hemispheres. Deep blue dial with rhodium-plated appliqués and hands, all lume-filledA three-digit or printed year, a single moon disc, or subdials whose hands do not move when the crown is turned
crownHow the calendar is setEvery calendar display, moon phase included, adjusts forwards and backwards from one crown position. No correctors in the case flankRecessed pushers around the case band. That is an earlier IWC perpetual, not a ProSet
movementCalibre through the display backCalibre 82655: Pellaton automatic winding with ceramic components, 34 jewels, 4Hz, 60 hours of reserveA visible rotor with a generic decorated bridge layout, or a solid caseback where a display back is expected
braceletEasX-CHANGE attachmentThe five-link steel bracelet releases and refits without tools, and the watch normally ships with a blue rubber strap alongside itConventional spring bars requiring a tool, which suggests a replacement bracelet or a different reference
caseCase dimensions42mm across and 14mm high in steelA 46mm case, which belongs to the older Big Pilot line rather than this reference
Common legitimate replacements
  • The rubber strap and the bracelet are both factory options and swapping between them is the point of the EasX-CHANGE system, so neither indicates anything about originality.
  • A perpetual calendar left unwound for months needs resetting rather than repair. Budget a service visit rather than reading a stopped calendar as a fault.
Expert resources: IWC’s product page for IW329601 publishes the full technical data. Monochrome Watches published a detailed explanation of the ProSet setting mechanism at launch, which is the clearest reference for how the crown should behave.
