Authentication

Verify the PT950 platinum hallmark in the caseback; the density difference from white gold is measurable on a scale.

Known issues in the market
  • White gold examples are occasionally misrepresented as platinum; the PT950 hallmark and the density-weight difference are definitive.
  • The proportions of the Tank Normale (shorter and squarer than the modern Tank Must) are reference-specific; measure before purchase.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Platinum cases are occasionally replaced with white gold; the hallmark and weight difference confirm the material.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Privé Tank Normale revives the proportions of the original 1917 Tank design: taller than it is wide, with a relatively narrow case and long lugs. The "Normale" proportion (as opposed to the wider "Américaine" or the elongated "Cintrée") is the defining visual trait. Platinum metal and the historical "Cartier Paris" dial text are the key authentication points.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Very low reproduction risk; the Privé Normale is a limited, expensive reference with minimal secondary market volume.

  • Case proportions that do not match the tall, narrow Normale specification immediately disqualify an example

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
Privé series, 2018 to presentWhite lacquer dial with black Roman numerals and blued sword hands. Proportions are tighter and taller than the modern Tank Solo or Tank Louis Cartier.
  • Case is taller (more vertical) than wide, with the height-to-width ratio approximating the 1917 original
  • "Cartier Paris" text on the dial, the Privé series hallmark
  • Brancards (side rails) that are long relative to the case width, making the watch appear to be all lugs
  • Manual-wind crown on the left at 9 o'clock; no crown guard
  • Platinum case; noticeably heavier than white gold for comparable dimensions

Case proportions

Original: The Tank Normale is distinguished from other Tank variants by its proportions. The case height exceeds the case width. The brancards are relatively long and the case width is narrow.

Replacement tells
  • Any case presented as a Normale where the width equals or exceeds the height -- those would be Américaine or Solo proportions
  • Brancards that are too short relative to the case height, making the watch look more square than the Normale should

Case back markings

toggle
Privé series, 2018 to present
  • PT950 platinum hallmark
  • Reference WGTA0109 and serial number
  • "CARTIER PARIS" consistent with Privé series designation

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 430 MC manual wind, as used across the Privé Tank series. Solid caseback; movement assessed at service only.
  • Box and papers are standard expectation for any Privé acquisition. Cartier boutique authentication is available for numbered Privé pieces.
