Authentication

Confirm the dial text matches the reference number; the "MUST DE CARTIER" versus "CARTIER" distinction identifies the generation.

Known issues in the market
  • Modern steel Tank Must (2021) dials read "CARTIER"; vintage Tank Must dials read "MUST DE CARTIER". A seller mixing these is either confused or misrepresenting.
  • Steel Tank Must commands less than gold; any seller claiming gold must have the case hallmark verified.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Vintage Must dials are occasionally fitted to modern steel cases; the dial text and case hallmark together confirm the genuine generation.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Tank Must (CRWSTA0058) is the quartz entry to the Tank Must revival. The colored lacquer dials -- in red, green, and black -- are the defining visual distinction. Being quartz, it is thinner than the automatic WSTA0041. The power reserve indicator on some configurations and the slim case profile are the authentication checkpoints.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

The colored lacquer dials attract reproduction interest due to their visual distinctiveness and the Tank Must's collector appeal.

  • Lacquer color that appears slightly off from the three approved colorways -- too bright, too dark, or with an incorrect undertone
  • "AUTOMATIC" text present on a stated quartz example
  • Case thickness that is greater than the quartz specification suggests

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2021 to present (quartz, colored lacquer dials)Lacquer dials in red, khaki green, or black. Quartz movement; thinner case than the automatic Must.
  • Lacquer dial in one of three colorways: red, khaki green, or matte black
  • Roman numerals in contrasting white or cream on the colored lacquer
  • "Tank Must" text on the dial
  • No "AUTOMATIC" text -- this is a quartz reference; the absence of this text distinguishes it from WSTA0041
  • Slimmer case profile than the large automatic Must
  • Some configurations include a solar power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock

Service part flags

Lacquer dial (quartz vs. automatic)

Original: The Must quartz dial is identical in color specification to the automatic variant but the case is thinner and lacks the "AUTOMATIC" text. The two references should not be confused.

Replacement tells
  • "AUTOMATIC" text present on a stated quartz CRWSTA0058 -- that text should be absent
  • Case thickness that matches the automatic variant rather than the slimmer quartz case
  • Lacquer color that does not match the three approved colorways for this reference

Case back markings

toggle
2021 to present
  • Solid caseback with reference CRWSTA0058 and serial number
  • "CARTIER", "ACIER", water resistance
  • Quartz movement designation on documentation (Cal. 157 or equivalent)
  • "Swiss Made"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Quartz movement; battery replacement is the primary maintenance requirement. The movement is otherwise maintenance-light compared to the automatic variants.
  • Solar configurations require exposure to light for power reserve; a depleted solar Must that has been stored in the dark may need initial light exposure before it runs correctly.
