Authentication

The floating crown guard must be smooth and continuous with the case; any weld seam or gap is a non-genuine indicator on the most copied Cartier silhouette.

Known issues in the market
  • The Ballon Bleu is the most widely counterfeited Cartier; the floating crown guard integration is the hardest detail for fakes to replicate.
  • Counterfeit crown guards show a visible seam or gap where they attach to the case; genuine examples are seamlessly integrated.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Crown cabochons are frequently replaced; Cartier service replacements use genuine sapphire.
  • Counterfeit bracelets with incorrect link thickness or surface finish are common; inspect every link.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The W69012Z4 is an earlier Ballon Bleu steel reference (pre-2020 generation) with the same defining crown guard architecture as the current models but without the QuickSwitch system. The crown guard dome and the pre-2020 bracelet clasp are the primary authentication checkpoints for this generation.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

The Ballon Bleu across all generations is among the most-reproduced Cartier references. Earlier-generation examples face the same crown guard authentication checkpoint as current models.

  • Crown guard dome that is not continuously curved or that shows a flat top
  • Cabochon crown that appears painted blue rather than being a translucent synthetic sapphire cabochon
  • Bracelet clasp that does not match the period-correct style for the stated reference generation

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
Mid-2000s to circa 2020 (W69012Z4)Silver sunburst dial, Roman numerals, blued sword hands, date window integrated within the crown guard architecture.
  • Integrated crown guard dome at 3 o'clock, same as current generation
  • Cabochon sapphire crown within the dome
  • Silver sunburst dial -- directional radial pattern visible under raking light
  • Date window within the crown guard structure
  • No QuickSwitch mechanism at the lugs (earlier generation); standard springbar strap attachment
  • "Ballon Bleu de Cartier" text on the lower dial field

Service part flags

toggle
Bracelet clasp (earlier generation)

Original: The W69012Z4 generation uses a folding deployant clasp with a "CARTIER" engraved plate. The clasp does not have the later hidden folding clasp of the current generation. The deployment mechanism is a butterfly-style fold with two side buttons.

Replacement tells
  • Clasp without "CARTIER" engraving or with engraving in incorrect typeface for the period
  • Current-generation hidden clasp on a stated W69012Z4 example -- the clasp style differs between generations
  • Bracelet links that do not align correctly at the clasp junction
Crown guard dome (consistent across generations)

Original: The crown guard dome is continuous and smooth, polished to a mirror finish. This is the same across all Ballon Bleu generations.

Replacement tells
  • Any flat section or angular cut in the dome profile
  • Dome surface that shows micro-scratches in a pattern suggesting the dome was re-polished incorrectly
  • Cabochon crown that is flat or has incorrect material from the genuine synthetic sapphire specification

Case back markings

toggle
Mid-2000s to circa 2020
  • Solid caseback with reference W69012Z4 and serial number in the format of the period (pre-WSSA/WGSA format)
  • "CARTIER", "ACIER", water resistance
  • Cal. 049 or 1847 MC depending on production year
  • "Swiss Made"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Earlier W69012Z4 examples may use Cal. 049 (ETA 2892 base) rather than the later Cal. 1847 MC. Both are reliable but parts availability for 049 is now more limited.
  • Service records from this generation should confirm which caliber is fitted; the two are not interchangeable without documentation adjustment.
