Price trend chart coming soon

The Type XXII 3880 with 10Hz high-frequency oscillator and 65-hour reserve is one of the most technically ambitious sport watches in production; secondary prices reflect the movement achievement and the resonance chamber's unique acoustic character.

The 10 Hz oscillator produces a near-continuous seconds sweep; any visible stepping confirms a movement issue.

Known issues in the market
  • Movement swaps replacing the high-frequency Cal. 589F with a standard 4 Hz movement.
  • High-frequency movements require more frequent service; service history gaps are a significant risk factor.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Cal. 589F requires service every 3-5 years due to high-frequency wear; undocumented service history is a deal-breaker.
  • The high-frequency escapement components are Breguet-specific; non-authorized service risks permanent calibration damage.

The Type XXII is the high-frequency successor to the Type XX: it runs at 10 Hz (72,000 vph) via a silicon escapement and is one of the fastest-beating production movements in the world. The frequency is the primary functional authenticator -- it is audible as a distinctly high-pitched tick and measurable on a timegrapher.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Movement running at standard frequency

  • Audible tick sounds like a conventional watch rather than the rapid buzz of 10 Hz
  • Timegrapher shows 28,800 vph or lower rather than 72,000 vph
  • "10 Hz" text on dial without corresponding high-frequency movement behavior

The 10 Hz frequency is the defining feature of the Type XXII. A watch labeled XXII that ticks at conventional frequency is not a Type XXII.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
All current productionMatte black or silver dial with the same Type XX layout. The "10 Hz" notation appears on the dial, distinguishing it from the Type XX.
  • "10 Hz" text printed on the dial, typically below the sub-seconds register
  • Same two-line "BREGUET / PARIS" text at 12 o'clock as the Type XX
  • Flyback chronograph layout: 30-minute at 3, small seconds at 6, 12-hour at 9
  • Presto rotating bezel system
  • Silicon escapement: crown winding feels lighter and smoother than on spring-detent or lever escapements of similar size

Service part flags

Silicon escapement components

Original: Cal. 589F uses a silicon lever and escape wheel. Silicon components require no lubrication at the escapement interface and are more brittle than steel -- they must not be touched or probed with metal tools during service.

Replacement tells
  • Movement service record that notes lubrication of the escapement lever or escape wheel -- silicon escapements should not be lubricated at these interfaces
  • Timegrapher reading showing beat rate significantly different from 72,000 vph (acceptable range is within +/- 200 vph of the stated frequency)

Case back markings

toggle
All production
  • Exhibition caseback with Cal. 589F engraved
  • "BREGUET" and serial number on caseback rim
  • Reference 3880 and material code on caseback or case flank

Movement tells

toggle
  • The 10 Hz beat is audible: hold the watch to your ear -- genuine Type XXII produces a rapid "buzz" rather than the discrete tick of a conventional 3-4 Hz movement
  • Timegrapher verification: 72,000 vph reads as 10 beats per second on a standard timegrapher; any timegrapher reading of 4 bps or 5 bps indicates the movement is not Cal. 589F
