The smoked-brown dégradé dial is a specific in-house finish faithfully scanned from the 1969 original; a flat-color or mismatched-gradient dial is not correct for this reference.
Known issues in the market
- The dégradé (gradient) dial darkens toward the edges in a specific way; reproductions and generic vintage-chronograph dials rarely match the vignette accurately.
- The case is a direct scan of the original 1969 A385, with sharp 90-degree lug terminations; rounded or softened lugs indicate a different or generic case.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| dial | Smoked brown dégradé finish | Warm brown gradient that darkens toward the edges, white-coloured sub-registers, rhodium-plated faceted indices and hands with beige Super-LumiNova | Flat, uniform dial color with no gradient; incorrect sub-register color; non-faceted or incorrectly finished indices |
| movement | El Primero 400 5 Hz beat rate | Sweep seconds hand appears nearly continuous; column-wheel chronograph visible through the screwed sapphire caseback | Stepping seconds hand indicating a lower-beat substitute; cam-actuated chronograph mechanism; solid (non-exhibition) caseback |
| case | 1969-scan cushion case geometry | Sharp 90-degree lug terminations, polished bevel along the case side, radial-brushed top surface consistent with the 03.A384.400/385.C855 specification | Rounded or softened lug ends; case proportions inconsistent with the 37mm/12.6mm original scan |
Common legitimate replacements
- Original light brown calfskin leather strap with rubber lining; steel ladder bracelet is an authorized factory option for this reference.
