Authentication

The 5 Hz El Primero beat rate must be confirmed through movement observation; tri-color sub-dial identity is the dial authentication.

Known issues in the market
  • Cal. El Primero 400B is the heritage caliber; 36,000vph architecture distinguishes it from lower-beat alternatives.
  • Tri-color sub-dial arrangement (silver, black, grey) is the El Primero identity marker.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Chronomaster Original is the direct lineage successor to the original 1969 El Primero, with the tri-color dial and the Cal. 400B at 36,000bph. The original-format 38mm case is smaller than the Sport and the dial color zoning is the defining feature.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replicas exist but at lower volume than the Sport. The tri-color dial and high-beat movement sweep are the functional tells.

  • Central chronograph hand at standard 6-tick-per-second sweep instead of El Primero's 10
  • Tri-color zone boundaries that show bleed under loupe
  • Ceramic bezel where the Original should have steel
  • Movement bridge layout inconsistent with El Primero 400B

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2017 to presentTri-color El Primero dial: silver main zone with grey and silver registers at 9 and 6, and a running seconds register (position varies by sub-line). The 38mm case is classically proportioned.
  • Three-zone dial: silver/white main dial, grey or contrasting registers
  • "El Primero" and Zenith star logo on the dial
  • "36,000 V/H" text confirming the high-beat caliber
  • CHRONOGRAPH AUTOMATIC or equivalent text on the dial
  • Classic steel case and steel bezel (no ceramic on the Original)
  • 38mm case diameter -- notably smaller than the Chronomaster Sport's 41mm

Tri-color dial zone accuracy

Original: The three dial zones (silver main, contrasting registers) are produced with different surface treatments during manufacture. The color boundaries should be clean and precise under loupe with no bleed between zones.

Replacement tells
  • Zone boundaries that show color bleed or overlap under 10x loupe -- a genuine tri-color dial has clean production-time zone transitions
  • Any zone where the surface texture is identical across the boundary -- genuine zones have different surface treatments
  • A replacement dial with flat-printed zone colors rather than genuinely different surface finishes
Steel bezel

Original: The Chronomaster Original uses a plain or tachymeter-scale steel bezel, not ceramic. The steel bezel is fixed. This distinguishes it from the ceramic-bezeled Chronomaster Sport.

Replacement tells
  • Ceramic bezel on a stated Chronomaster Original -- the Original uses steel
  • Rotating bezel on a reference that should have a fixed bezel
  • Scale markings on the bezel that do not correspond to the specification for this variant

Case back markings

toggle
2017 to present
  • Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. El Primero 400B
  • "El Primero" and "36,000 A/H" text on the movement plate or caseback
  • Reference 03.2040.400 on the case band
  • "Swiss Made" on the dial at 6 and on the caseback
  • Serial number on case band
  • El Primero 5-spoke wheel set visible through caseback

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 400B beats at 36,000bph. The central chronograph hand sweeps 10 positions per second. Count the ticks: 10 per second is El Primero, 6 per second is not.
  • The 400B is the original-lineage El Primero caliber as preserved during the quartz crisis. The movement's bridge layout is documented extensively in Zenith literature.
  • Power reserve is 50 hours on the 400B (shorter than the 3600's 60 hours). A fully wound Original stopping before 42 hours warrants service.
  • El Primero movements require authorized Zenith service for high-frequency caliber work.
