The SARB033 is a discontinued Seiko that commands premiums in the secondary market. Outright fakes are rare but service-swapped movements and dial refinishes appear occasionally.

Known issues in the market
  • Discontinued status has increased prices enough that service movements from similar Seiko calibers are occasionally swapped in.
  • The black dial develops a distinctive sheen with age; refinished dials show a different finish quality.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Crystal replacement is common; original is hardlex on the SARB033.
  • Crown replacement at service is documented.

Last reviewed June 2026

The SARB033 was discontinued in 2019, which has pushed gray market prices well above original retail. Cal. 6R15 is a well-documented movement. Condition and service history are the primary inspection concerns; reproductions of this reference are uncommon, but worn-out examples sold as near-mint are the real risk.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Direct SARB033 reproductions are rare due to the watch's modest collector profile, but worn examples misrepresented as unused or lightly worn are the primary market risk.

  • Case lug edges that are rounded or scratched down, inconsistent with claimed low-use condition
  • Crystal with hairlines under raking light
  • Crown with wear marks suggesting frequent use
  • Lume on indices that has aged significantly relative to claimed service history

Verify the service history claim against the case back serial number. A 2009 example sold as "rarely worn" should still have original lume condition.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2008 to 2018Black dial with applied silver-tone indices, no lume on indices, date at 3. The dial surface has a subtle sunburst finish visible in raking light. A single production run with minor regional variants (JDM vs global) differing in text language on the dial.
  • Black sunburst dial with applied rectangular silver indices
  • "SEIKO" and "AUTOMATIC" text above the 6 o'clock position, "6R15" caliber designation printed below 12
  • Day and date display at the 3 o'clock position
  • Solid stainless caseback with "SARB033" engraved around the circumference

Service part flags

toggle
Dial

Original: The original SARB033 dial has a matte black sunburst surface with applied indices. The "SEIKO" text is crisp, and the day/date window surround is a tight fit with no gap.

Replacement tells
  • Glossy or overly reflective surface without the sunburst texture
  • Loose or off-center date/day window surround
  • Incorrect font weight on the "SEIKO" or "AUTOMATIC" text
  • Applied indices that sit at inconsistent heights above the dial surface
Hands

Original: Sword-style hands with lume plots. The hour and minute hands are polished on the flat face and brushed on the sides.

Replacement tells
  • Mismatched finish between the hour hand and minute hand
  • Lume plots that are cracked, yellowed inconsistently, or visibly different from the dial indices lume
  • Hands from a different Seiko model with incorrect profile
Crown

Original: Push-pull crown at 3 o'clock, not screw-down. Small knurled crown appropriate for a dress-sport case.

Replacement tells
  • Crown from a different Seiko model with incorrect diameter or knurl pattern
  • Screw-down crown, which is incorrect for this reference
Caseback

Original: Solid stainless caseback, not display. Engraved text around the circumference includes "SEIKO," "SARB033," and water resistance marking.

Replacement tells
  • Aftermarket display caseback substituted for the original solid back
  • Missing or incorrect engraving on the caseback

Case back markings

toggle
2008 to 2018
  • SARB033 reference number engraved around the perimeter
  • "SEIKO" brand name
  • "WATER RESISTANT 10 BAR" (100m) rating
  • Serial number in Seiko's standard format (first digit encodes production year)
  • Caseback is solid steel, not display

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 6R15 runs at 28,800 bph (8 ticks per second). Any SARB033 with a 21,600 bph beat rate (6 ticks per second) has a movement swap.
  • The 6R15 is hackable (seconds hand stops when crown is pulled to setting position) and manually windable. A non-hacking example has been tampered with or replaced.
  • Power reserve is nominally 50 hours. A freshly wound example that stops before 40 hours has a worn mainspring and needs service.
  • Common service issue on older examples: the day/date corrector loses its positive snap. Test this before purchase by advancing the date slowly through a full 24-hour cycle.
  • The movement serial number on the caseback should decode to a production year consistent with the reference's production window (2008 to 2018). Seiko's serial number format: first digit = last digit of production year.
