Authentication

The 5711/1A blue dial was among the most-discussed watch market events of recent years and now commands extreme secondary premiums. The replica and franken-watch market targeting this reference is substantial.

Known issues in the market
  • The steel/blue 5711/1A is the most-replicated Patek reference since the Calatrava; high-quality fakes have improved significantly.
  • Olive-green dial variants (final production run) command extraordinary premiums and are specifically targeted for dial swaps into original blue-dial cases.
  • Cases and bracelets from authentic watches are sometimes combined with non-original movements.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Bracelet pin and clasp replacement is common over long ownership; confirm correct PP fittings.
  • Crystal replacement is standard service; confirm correct sapphire specification.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 5711/1A blue dial is the most-discussed discontinued Patek reference in recent years and commands a large secondary premium. Applied dial text, dauphine hand finishing, and movement quality separate genuine examples from the substantial replica market.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

High-quality super clone replicas targeting the steel/blue variant, using modified ETA movements with cloned Cal. 324 casework.

  • Flat dial text for "Patek Philippe" and "Geneve" -- genuine is always applied and raised
  • Embossed stripe pattern that is printed or etched rather than genuinely three-dimensional -- flat replicas lose depth near the indices
  • Dauphine hands with a single polishing plane rather than the multi-plane Patek finishing
  • Bracelet center links with incorrect brushing direction
  • Calatrava cross above 12 that is printed rather than applied -- it should be a separate metal piece

For any 5711 transaction at secondary market prices, professional authentication by Patek, Phillips, or Christie's watch specialists is the collector community standard.

HIGH RISK

Olive green dial swapped into a blue dial case to create the more valuable olive configuration.

  • Case serial number that falls outside the final-year production range for the olive dial variant
  • Dial color that looks forced or slightly wrong compared to known olive examples
  • Papers and box that reference the blue dial (5711/1A-010) when the dial appears olive
MEDIUM

Cases and bracelets from authentic watches combined with non-original movements.

  • Geneva seal absent on movement bridges visible through the exhibition caseback
  • Coarse finishing on movement bridges inconsistent with Patek production standard
  • Gyromax balance wheel without the four gold adjustment weights

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2006 to 2021 (blue dial)The standard and overwhelmingly common 5711/1A configuration -- steel case, blue horizontal-striped dial.
  • Blue dial with horizontal embossed stripe texture, tactile and three-dimensional
  • "Patek Philippe" text applied (raised, not printed) -- casts a shadow under directional lighting
  • Calatrava cross applied above 12 o'clock, also raised and three-dimensional
  • Dauphine hands with polished surfaces across multiple planes
  • Luminescent applied baton indices
2021 (olive green, final production)Final production run with olive green dial -- commands extraordinary premium over the blue variant.
  • Distinctly olive-green dial tone (not blue, not khaki -- a warm olive)
  • Same horizontal embossed texture as blue variant
  • Same applied text and indices
  • Only available through Patek authorized retailers in the final 2021 allocation

Dial

Original: Horizontal embossed stripe texture is produced during the dial manufacturing process. The embossing is raised and genuinely tactile -- running a fingernail lightly across the dial produces a perceptible corrugated feel across each stripe. The stripes are genuinely three-dimensional: each ridge casts a micro-shadow on its lower edge under directional light. The sunburst finishing should have directional depth visible as the watch is tilted. "Patek Philippe" and "Geneve" are applied text pieces -- separate from the dial surface, raised, and cast distinct shadows. On a genuine 5711, any line of the embossed text appears to float above the dial when viewed from the side.

Replacement tells
  • Flat "Patek Philippe" text that does not cast a shadow -- indicates printing rather than applied text
  • Embossing that fades or becomes less defined near the hour markers or dial edges -- genuine embossing maintains consistent depth across the full dial field including near the indices
  • Horizontal stripes that appear flat or printed rather than producing a tactile corrugated surface -- the most reliable single tell without magnification
  • Under-dial printing visible as any text that appears to be part of the dial surface rather than sitting above it
  • Olive green dial that is incorrect for a blue-dial case (dial swaps from less desirable to more desirable variants occur)
  • Graduated blue-grey sunburst without the directional depth shift when the watch is tilted under a single light source -- genuine dials shift from darker near the center to lighter toward the edges as the angle changes
Hands

Original: Dauphine hands are finished across multiple planes. Each face and each beveled edge has its own distinct mirror finish. The finished planes are visible as the watch is tilted in light.

Replacement tells
  • Hands with a single flat plane of polishing -- service replacement hands are often finished to a lesser standard than original manufacture
  • Bevel edges on the hands that are rounded rather than sharply defined
  • Lume color on the hands inconsistent with the dial indices (both should be consistent cream-to-white)
  • Hand tips that are not correctly tapered for the Nautilus specification
Crown

Original: Fluted crown with a specific fine-milling pattern. The fluting is fine and regular, not broad.

Replacement tells
  • Smooth crown without the correct fine fluting -- smooth crowns are service replacements
  • Crown diameter that is too large or too small relative to the case tube
  • Crown engraving or finish that differs from production standard
Bracelet

Original: Integrated folded-link bracelet with center links brushed lengthwise and outer links polished. Bracelet tapers toward the butterfly deployment clasp. "PP" on the clasp in the Patek typeface.

Replacement tells
  • Center links with horizontal brushing instead of lengthwise (the brushing direction is specific)
  • Bracelet that does not taper -- it should narrow perceptibly from case to clasp
  • Clasp typography that is not correct Patek -- the "PP" letters have specific proportions
  • Aftermarket Nautilus-style bracelet that lacks the correct link fold geometry
Bezel

Original: The bezel carries 8 horizontally oriented screws at equal spacing. The screws are decorative, not functional, and sit recessed into the bezel surface. All eight screw heads share identical geometry, depth, and slot orientation.

Replacement tells
  • Screw heads that protrude above the bezel surface rather than sitting flush or slightly recessed
  • Screw slot orientation that varies between screws -- some horizontal, some diagonal
  • Screw head geometry that varies between positions, with one appearing wider or shallower than its neighbors
  • A bezel screw count that is not exactly 8

Case back markings

toggle
2006 to 2021
  • Exhibition sapphire caseback displaying Cal. 324 S C
  • "Patek Philippe" and "Geneve" engraved on the movement plate visible through caseback
  • Reference 5711/1A and serial number on the case flanks
  • Case serial is on the case flank at 6 o'clock, not on the caseback itself
  • Movement serial visible on the movement through the exhibition caseback

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 324 S C is an automatic movement with sweep seconds and quickset date. The date corrects via crown position 2 with an instantaneous jump -- slow or creeping date advance indicates worn date mechanism.
  • Geneva seal (Poincon de Geneve) is visible on the movement bridges through the exhibition caseback. Bridges should show Cotes de Geneve striping, polished chamfers on all edges, and a mirror-flat surface on the main plate.
  • The Gyromax balance wheel has four gold adjustment weights on the rim. Under magnification these should be clearly visible and correctly positioned.
  • Free-sprung Gyromax balance: the regulator spring does not directly contact the hairspring. Any visible contact between regulator and spring indicates non-Patek movement or incorrect service.
  • Patek Philippe service centers stamp the caseback with a service date when the movement is overhauled. The last service date can be verified against the service record.
