Authentication

The Speedmaster Moonphase is a low-counterfeit-pressure specialty reference; Cal. 9904 Co-Axial movement visible through the caseback and the Apollo 17 astronaut moonphase disc are the authentication anchors.

Known issues in the market
  • Lower counterfeit pressure than the Professional Moonwatch, but incorrect Cal. 9904 representations have appeared; verify the Co-Axial escapement is present through the display caseback.
  • Black lacquer dial with PVD-treated sub-registers has a specific depth and sheen; lighter or flatter black dials indicate a non-genuine piece.
  • Apollo 17 astronaut silhouette on the moonphase disc is a specific, detailed image; vague or generic astronaut figures indicate a non-genuine moonphase wheel.
  • METAS certification should be verifiable via Omega's serial lookup; Cal. 9904 is a Master Chronometer movement.

The Speedmaster Moonphase is the most complicated current Speedmaster: manual-wind chronograph plus moonphase and date, with a ceramic bezel insert and full Master Chronometer certification. The moonphase disc accuracy and the enamel or lacquered moonphase aperture finish are the first visual checks.

Known reproduction risks

Moonphase disc with incorrect finish or moon figure quality

  • Disc finish flat rather than enamel-deep
  • Moon figures blurry or imprecise under 5x
  • Star placement or count inconsistent with documented Omega moonphase disc

The Moonphase Chronograph is not a high-volume fake target, but the moonphase aperture is the most technically difficult element to reproduce correctly and should be examined first.

Moonphase disc and aperture finish

Original: The moonphase disc is enameled or lacquered with specific moon and star figures on a blue disc. The finish quality is distinctive: the moon figures have crisp edges and the disc color is a specific Omega palette blue. The aperture frame is applied and polished.

Replacement tells
  • Moonphase disc with flat or matte finish where lacquer or enamel should give depth
  • Moon figures with soft or blurry edges -- genuine are crisply applied
  • Disc color different from the correct Omega blue -- reproductions use cheaper dye
  • Stars on the disc inconsistent in size or placement
Ceramic bezel insert

Original: Black ceramic insert with tachymeter scale. The insert sits flush with no gap. The 12 o'clock pip is luminescent and centered. Ceramic has a specific surface quality distinct from aluminum or steel inserts.

Replacement tells
  • Gap between the ceramic insert and the bezel surround
  • Insert appears lighter or has a different surface texture than genuine ceramic
  • Pip at 12 off-center or with lume overflow

Movement tells

  • Cal. 9904 is manual-wind -- the crown at 9 o'clock winds with a progressive resistance that builds from an empty mainspring. Power reserve is 60 hours.
  • The moonphase advances approximately 1 degree per day and needs a manual correction once every 2.5 years. A moonphase that requires more frequent correction has a skipping or imprecise advance mechanism.
  • The chronograph should start and stop cleanly via the pushers at 2 and 4. The reset should snap the seconds and minute hands to zero without oscillation.
