Authentication

High counterfeit volume for this entry-level reference; the winged-hourglass logo on the dial is the primary authentication point.

Known issues in the market
  • Longines winged-hourglass logo has blurred or malformed wings; this is the most reliable tell on a counterfeit Presence.
  • Dial text typography does not match Longines specification; counterfeiters approximate but cannot match the exact font and spacing.
  • Movement visible through caseback is not Longines-finished; counterfeit examples use generic movements without Longines finishing.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Straps on the Presence are the most commonly replaced component; originals are signed.
  • Crystal replacements on this price-tier reference may use mineral glass instead of sapphire; verify crystal hardness with a scratch test if provenance is unknown.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Presence 38 is a pure dress watch: small seconds at 6, no date, thin case at 9.3mm. The L595 (ETA 2895-1 base) is a reliable dress caliber. Low reproduction risk; verify exhibition caseback movement.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Presence is a budget-accessible dress watch with no reproduction risk. The main concern on pre-owned examples is dial swaps from other Longines references.

  • Date window where there should be none
  • Sport-style hands instead of dauphine or baton
  • Applied indices replaced with printed after service

Dial variants by era

  • Silver, black, or white dial with applied baton or dauphine indices

  • Exhibition or solid caseback options

Service part flags

toggle
Dial

Original: Clean dress dial without date aperture; any date window means a different reference or dial swap

Replacement tells
  • Date window present on a no-date reference
  • Small seconds at wrong position (should be at 6)
  • Printed indices replacing applied
Hands

Original: Dauphine or baton hands appropriate to the dress category; matched finish

Replacement tells
  • Sword or thick sport-style hands are wrong for Presence
  • Mismatched finishing between hour, minute, and seconds hands

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to present
  • Exhibition caseback (some variants) showing L595 movement with Geneva stripes
  • Caseback rim: reference L4.805.4.12.2, 30M water resistance
  • Cal. L595 on movement plate or visible through exhibition caseback

Movement tells

toggle
  • The L595 (ETA 2895-1 base) runs at 28,800 bph; a timing machine confirms this and distinguishes from an incorrectly replaced movement.
  • Power reserve is 42 hours; modest but adequate. A watch consistently running under 36 hours needs mainspring inspection.
  • Hacking seconds at crown position 2 should work cleanly.
  • The small-seconds subdial should tick once per second with no slippage or erratic advance; any irregular beat in the subdial hand suggests a loose cannon pinion.
  • The 9.3mm case height is achieved with a dress-grade movement height; any case thicker than this suggests a case or movement substitution.
