Authentication

The Big Pilot 43 has low counterfeit pressure; the in-house Cal. 82100 Pellaton winding system visible through the caseback and the correct 43mm case proportions are the primary authentication anchors.

Known issues in the market
  • The current 43mm generation (IW329301) is a case reduction from the previous 46.2mm Big Pilot; replicas and misrepresentations of the 46.2mm version as the 43mm do appear.
  • Pellaton click-spring winding system is specific to IWC in-house movements; a non-Pellaton winding system in a claimed Cal. 82100 watch is incorrect.
  • Power reserve indicator is displayed on the movement through the caseback, not on the dial; dial-side power reserve would indicate a different reference.
  • Blue and black dial variants are both genuine; verify the dial color matches the declared reference sub-number.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather straps (brown or black) are commonly replaced; IWC-authorized straps maintain value.
  • Caseback gaskets are replaced at service; normal on any pre-owned example.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The IW329301 is the 43mm version of the Big Pilot, introduced as a more wearable alternative to the 46mm original. It uses Cal. 82100 (an in-house automatic) and retains the oversized onion crown and anti-magnetic soft iron cage. The date is at 3 o'clock. This reference is a scaled-down version of the flagship design and a strong alternative for collectors with smaller wrists.

Known reproduction risks

HIGH RISK

Replica Big Pilot 43 watches with incorrect onion crown proportions

  • Replica onion crowns are frequently too thin or use the wrong knurling pattern
  • The oversized crown on replicas often does not screw down; this is a quick verification
  • Dial text on replicas uses slightly incorrect font weight on the large "12" numeral
  • Soft iron inner cage is absent in almost all replicas; caseback opening is the fastest verification

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2018 to present (43mm)Black dial with the same design language as the 46mm Big Pilot: large Arabic numerals, minimal text, and a central Arabic hour numeral at 12. The proportions are scaled for the smaller case.
  • Large "12" Arabic numeral at 12 in proportion to 43mm case (slightly more delicate than the 46mm)
  • Date window at 3 o'clock -- not present on the 46mm original
  • Oversized onion crown at 3, designed for gloved use
  • "BIG PILOT'S WATCH" and "IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN" dial text

Crown

Original: The oversized onion crown is a defining Big Pilot element; it should be proportionally correct for the 43mm case. The 46mm crown is slightly larger and will look oversized.

Replacement tells
  • A smaller pilot crown (from the Mark series) fitted in place of the onion crown
  • Crown that does not screw down to case
  • Onion crown that is proportionally too large (from the 46mm reference)
Movement

Original: Cal. 82100 is the in-house automatic with 60-hour power reserve. It replaced ETA-based movements in the current Big Pilot lineup.

Replacement tells
  • An ETA-based caliber in a stated 43mm Big Pilot; this generation uses in-house Cal. 82100
  • Power reserve under 48 hours

Case back markings

toggle
2018 to present
  • Solid steel caseback
  • Engraved: IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN
  • Reference IW329301 and serial number
  • Soft iron inner case (anti-magnetic cage) visible inside when caseback is opened
  • The cage is a key provenance indicator; Big Pilot replicas rarely include a functional soft iron cage

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 82100 runs at 28,800 bph with 60 hours of power reserve. The Pellaton automatic winding system is used here as in other IWC in-house calibers.
  • The balance wheel is protected by a soft iron cage that surrounds the entire movement; in-field magnetic resistance is verified by this cage, not by movement metallurgy alone.
