Authentication

"BVLGARI BVLGARI" bezel text must be uniform depth all around; polishing reduces depth and unevenness indicates counterfeit.

Known issues in the market
  • Uneven depth or letter spacing in the bezel text indicates a counterfeit bezel.
  • Polishing reduces bezel text depth; shallow text on a supposedly unpolished watch is suspect.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The BVLGARI BVLGARI is defined by the "BVLGARI BVLGARI" text repeated twice around the bezel or dial rim, a design registered in 1977. The double-name inscription must be consistent, evenly spaced, and at the correct depth. Replicas typically get the spacing or font wrong.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replicas exist targeting the BVLGARI BVLGARI name recognition. The bezel inscription spacing and depth are consistently wrong on reproductions.

  • Bezel inscription with uneven letter spacing or depth at any point around the circumference
  • "BULGARI BULGARI" with a U rather than the correct Roman "BVLGARI BVLGARI" spelling
  • Inscription text that is printed or surface-applied rather than engraved
  • Movement bridge layout inconsistent with Cal. BVL 191

Look at the inscription under a loupe in raking light. Genuine engraving shows clean walls with consistent depth and shadow. Printed text is flat and lacks those walls entirely.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2017 to presentDress-sport watch with the "BVLGARI BVLGARI" double inscription on the bezel or dial rim. Clean round case, integrated or removable bracelet. Available in black and silver dials.
  • "BVLGARI BVLGARI" inscription around the bezel or chapter ring, repeated twice: the text circles the full bezel with the brand name appearing at two positions
  • The inscription should be engraved at consistent depth and letter spacing all the way around -- no compression or stretching at any point
  • Clean round case without octagonal elements -- the BVLGARI BVLGARI is round, not Octo
  • Applied indices on the dial (not the bezel inscription)
  • "AUTOMATIC" text on the dial confirming the movement type

BVLGARI BVLGARI bezel inscription

Original: The double-name inscription is the brand's most recognizable legal trademark on this reference. It is engraved into the bezel material, not printed or applied. Each letter should be at consistent depth with uniform spacing. Under loupe, the engraving should show clean letter walls without burring.

Replacement tells
  • Letter spacing that is compressed or stretched at any point around the bezel -- genuine production maintains consistent spacing throughout
  • Letter depth that varies between characters -- a genuine engraving is mechanically uniform
  • Any printing or surface application of the text rather than engraving -- the inscription should have depth and shadow under raking light
  • Letter edges with burring or roughness under loupe -- genuine Bulgari engraving is clean and precise
  • Text that reads "BULGARI BULGARI" rather than "BVLGARI BVLGARI" -- the Roman V is the correct spelling and is legally distinct
Case and dial proportion

Original: The BVLGARI BVLGARI 41mm has specific case proportions in which the bezel inscription occupies the visual space where a chapter ring would normally sit. The dial itself is therefore relatively clean with only applied indices.

Replacement tells
  • Dial with printed text chapter ring in the space where the bezel inscription should be -- indicates a non-original dial or bezel
  • Applied indices with inconsistent height or finish relative to each other
  • Any date complication on a variant that should not have one -- confirm against reference documentation

Case back markings

toggle
2017 to present
  • Exhibition or solid caseback depending on variant
  • "BVLGARI" text and reference 102676 or current production reference
  • "SWISS MADE" on the caseback
  • Cal. BVL 191 designation on exhibition backs
  • Serial number on case band
  • 50M water resistance rating

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. BVL 191 beats at 28,800bph with a 50-hour power reserve. A fully wound BVLGARI BVLGARI stopping before 42 hours warrants service.
  • The BVL 191 is Bulgari's in-house sport/dress automatic. Movement finishing visible through the caseback should show consistent bridge finishing and a Bulgari-signed rotor.
  • The case is 9.5mm thick -- substantial compared to the Finissimo family but standard for a dress-sport piece. A watch that feels unnaturally thin or thick relative to a 9.5mm expectation warrants verification.
