Authentication

The Baumatic is B&M's best movement; an in-house caseback showing ETA or Sellita architecture is a definitive movement swap.

Known issues in the market
  • The Baumatic has a distinctive bridge layout; any Clifton Baumatic caseback showing ETA or Sellita architecture has been fitted with a non-genuine movement.
  • The silicon hairspring gives anti-magnetic properties; verify the movement is in-house through the caseback window.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Clifton Baumatic runs the in-house BM13-1975A movement with a silicon hairspring and 5-day power reserve; the caseback view is the fastest authentication check.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Clifton Baumatic is not a significant reproduction target; misrepresentation is more likely to be a standard Clifton (ETA movement) listed as a Baumatic.

  • Caseback: silicon hairspring and BAUMATIC movement markings are the definitive check.
  • A non-Baumatic Clifton with an ETA 2892 movement will have only a 42-hour power reserve.
  • Applied index edges under 10x magnification.

Confirm "BAUMATIC" appears on both the dial and the caseback engraving or movement plate.

Dial variants by era

2018 to presentBlue, silver, or white dial with applied baton indices; date window at 3 o'clock; slim 10.6mm case height. Steel case with leather or bracelet options.

Service part flags

Silicon hairspring

Original: Silicon hairspring visible through the display caseback; appears as a flat, translucent blue-tinted spring rather than the metallic coil of a conventional spring.

Replacement tells
  • A conventional metallic coil hairspring in this movement indicates the silicon spring was replaced with a standard part during service.
  • The silicon spring may appear lighter or more translucent than steel; its flat cross-section is different from a round-wire metal spring.
Crown

Original: Signed Baume & Mercier crown; push-pull.

Replacement tells
  • Unsigned or plain crown suggests replacement.
Dial

Original: Applied baton indices; sunray dial finish; date aperture with clean edges.

Replacement tells
  • Printed indices in place of applied indicate a non-original or aftermarket dial.

Case back markings

toggle
2018 to present
  • BAUME & MERCIER CLIFTON BAUMATIC
  • BM13-1975A caliber designation
  • SWISS MADE
  • ANTI-MAGNETIC / 120H POWER RESERVE noted on movement or caseback engraving on some variants
  • Display caseback standard; silicon hairspring visible

Movement tells

toggle
  • The BM13-1975A was developed in partnership with Sellita; the movement architecture resembles the SW300 base but with the silicon hairspring module.
  • Five-day power reserve is the functional tell; a watch that runs for only 40 hours has lost the silicon spring or had the mainspring replaced with a shorter barrel.
  • Anti-magnetic rating to 1,500 gauss is a property of the silicon spring; a watch with a conventional spring loses this rating.
  • The rotor should show Baume & Mercier or Richemont-group finishing; an unsigned or generic rotor indicates a movement swap.
