The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe shares the 1315 movement with the Automatique and is distinguished by a ceramic bezel; secondary prices are consistent and the ceramic bezel variant is the more sought everyday configuration.

Authentication

Triple-barrel Cal. 1315 through the caseback and chip-free ceramic bezel insert are the two primary authentication points.

Known issues in the market
  • Note: a guide also exists for the Bathyscaphe under a shorter reference ID; authentication checks are identical.
  • The ceramic bezel insert cannot be repaired; any chip requires full replacement.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Bathyscaphe is the contemporary FF family member: 43mm, ceramic bezel, slightly thinner case than the FF Automatique, with a more modern dial presentation. Caliber 1315 with its full-size bimetallic rotor is shared with the FF Automatique. The ceramic bezel and the linen-texture (or striped) dial are the Bathyscaphe identifiers.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Movement swap with non-caliber-1315

  • Full-size automatic rotor visible through display caseback
  • Power reserve under 72 hours from full wind
  • Bridge finishing inconsistent with Blancpain in-house style

ETA 2824-2 movement swaps into grey-market Bathyscaphe cases are documented. The display caseback is the definitive check -- look for the micro-rotor, not a full rotor.

MEDIUM

Wrong bezel material for claimed variant

  • Aluminum insert on a watch claimed as B52A (ceramic variant)
  • Bezel insert shows different scratch pattern than ceramic (ceramic scratches rarely; aluminum scratches easily)
  • Bezel color inconsistent with ceramic matte-black appearance

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2013 to presentBlack, blue, or grey dial with a satin or linen-texture surface finish. The texture is more refined than the heavily applied FF Automatique dial. Applied luminescent indices. "Fifty Fathoms" script at 9 o'clock, "BATHYSCAPHE" in capitals below. The overall presentation is more dressy than the FF Automatique despite being a dive watch.
  • Ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel with engraved scale
  • Satin or linen-texture dial surface (not the bold matte of the FF Automatique)
  • "BATHYSCAPHE" in capitals below the "Fifty Fathoms" script
  • 43mm case -- round, with softer lug transitions than FF Automatique
  • Date window at 4:30
  • Applied luminescent baton indices at each hour

Service part flags

Bezel

Original: Ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel. The ceramic is harder than aluminum and shows less wear. The engraved scale is filled with luminescent material. 120-click unidirectional action. The ceramic bezel is identifiable by its even, matte-black appearance and resistance to scratching.

Replacement tells
  • Aluminum insert (belongs to FF Automatique -- softer, shows scratches differently)
  • Sapphire insert (belongs to the 5015-1130-52A)
  • Bezel scale with painted rather than engraved fill
  • Bezel clicks loose or inconsistent
Caseback

Original: Screw-down caseback with sapphire display window. Caliber 1315 with its full-size bimetallic rotor visible. Same movement architecture as the FF Automatique. "BLANCPAIN" and "1315" engraved on the caseback rim.

Replacement tells
  • Solid caseback -- genuine Bathyscaphe has display caseback
  • Micro-rotor or any rotor smaller than the standard full-size design
  • Wrong caliber visible -- bridge layout inconsistent with caliber 1315
Dial texture

Original: The linen or satin finish on the Bathyscaphe dial is a deliberate design choice separating it from the FF Automatique. Under raking light, the texture has a directional quality. The dial appears more refined and less aggressively tool-watch in character.

Replacement tells
  • Completely matte black dial without the linen texture -- may indicate FF Automatique dial swap
  • Printed texture that repeats uniformly rather than naturally
  • Dial color inconsistent with genuine Bathyscaphe production colors (black, blue, grey, sand)

Case back markings

toggle
2013 to present
  • Caliber 1315 designation
  • Water resistance: 300m / 1000ft
  • "BLANCPAIN" with mountain logo
  • Reference 5000-1110-B52A with serial number
  • "LE BRASSUS" on some examples

Movement tells

toggle
  • Caliber 1315 is shared with the FF Automatique. All movement service tells are identical: full-size bimetallic rotor, 5-day power reserve, silicon hairspring, three barrels.
  • The Bathyscaphe case is slightly thinner than the FF Automatique despite carrying the same movement -- Blancpain achieves this with a thinner caseback profile. If the two watches sit at the same case height, one of them has a different movement.
