Historiques Aronde 1954

The Historiques Aronde 1954 is the rectangular outlier in Vacheron Constantin's Historiques line: a faithful re-edition of a 1954 dress reference named for the double-curved "swallow wing" flanks along its case. Rose gold, hand-wound, a solid caseback, and a hand-engraved guilloché dial with small seconds at 6. Every other Historiques re-edition is round or tonneau; this one genuinely is not, which is most of the appeal and most of the reason it never became a volume seller.

What it is

Vacheron launched the non-limited rose gold Aronde 1954 (ref. 81018/000R-9657) at SIHH in 2011, a year after a 20-piece white gold limited edition for the Japanese market introduced the shape in 2010. The original 1950s Aronde was a rectangular case with the same curved-flank construction, aimed at clients who wanted a distinctive silhouette without complication. The re-edition runs the in-house Cal. 1400 AS, a hand-wound movement carrying the Hallmark of Geneva, visible only through documentation since the caseback is solid rather than an exhibition window.

The dial reproduces the original's fine linear guilloché in four alternating panels, with applied numerals restricted to 12 and 6 and small seconds recessed at 6. The reference has since been discontinued; it is not part of Vacheron's current product lineup or dealer network.

Buying notes

Confirm the case shape and dimensions first: this reference is rectangular, 31.2mm x 44.55mm, and does not exist in a round or cushion case, so a mismatch here is disqualifying rather than a condition issue. The caseback is solid, so movement condition and service history cannot be verified by eye; get documentation. The hand-engraved guilloché dial cannot be refinished without destroying the texture, so inspect it closely under raking light for scratches or amateur cleaning attempts.

As with most rectangular manual-wind dress pieces, crown and stem wear from daily winding is worth checking, and the alligator strap creases permanently, so factor in replacement cost. Confirm the case-band reference reads 81018/000R-9657 and matches the dial and movement generation.

Market read

Historical retail for the Aronde 1954 ranged roughly from the mid-$20,000s to the high-$20,000s over its production run as Vacheron raised prices generationally; it was never a high-volume reference. On the secondary market it now trades at a real discount to Vacheron's round-case Historiques pieces (the Cornes de Vache 1955, the 222) because a rectangular dress case is a smaller-audience shape, with pre-owned examples turning up roughly in the high-teens to high-$20,000s depending on condition, strap, and whether box and papers are present. Complete sets are uncommon on the market.

Service expectations

The Cal. 1400 AS is an in-house hand-wound caliber; Vacheron Constantin authorized service centers are the safest route for parts availability, though independent watchmakers experienced with slim manual VC movements can service it. Because the caseback is solid, there is no way to visually pre-check movement condition before a service, so budget for a full overhaul if service history is unknown or more than several years old.
