Authentication

The Compax two-pusher three-register configuration must match the original vintage UG Compax layout; verify against original UG Compax dial documentation.

Known issues in the market
  • The re-edition dial must replicate original Compax configuration; any deviation from the two-pusher, three-register layout is a wrong model or non-genuine dial.
  • The ETA 2894-2 base with column wheel is the correct movement; any other architecture is a discrepancy.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Compax and Tri-Compax are UG's most collected vintage chronographs. The Tri-Compax has three registers (running seconds, 30-minute counter, 12-hour counter). The column-wheel movement is the authentication foundation for both.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Incorrect caliber in a UG Compax case; dial with non-original register count.

  • A three-register dial in a case with only two-register pusher provision (or vice versa) is a mismatch
  • Column wheel confirmation through movement inspection is definitive

UG archive and major auction house lot records are the reference for Compax/Tri-Compax serial verification.

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1940s to 1970s (Compax / Tri-Compax)Compax: two sub-registers. Tri-Compax: three sub-registers. Both use column-wheel chronograph movements.
  • "COMPAX" or "TRI-COMPAX" on dial (not always present; some examples omit the model name)
  • "UNIVERSAL GENEVE" on dial
  • Two sub-registers (Compax) or three (Tri-Compax)
  • Column-wheel chronograph with pushers at 2 and 4
  • Original caliber numbers: Cal. 285 (Compax) / Cal. 287 or 295 (Tri-Compax)

Service part flags

toggle
Register Hands (sub-dials)

Original: Fine dauphine or baton hands on sub-registers; original hands show consistent patina with the main hands.

Replacement tells
  • Replacement hands with a different finish or patina level than the main hands
  • Hands that are too bright or polished on an aged dial
Column Wheel

Original: Visible through the movement; ratcheted star-shaped wheel.

Replacement tells
  • Cam-lever substitution; the feel of the pushers changes (cam-lever has a softer, less distinct engagement)

Case back markings

toggle
1940s to 1970s
  • "UNIVERSAL GENEVE" on caseback
  • "SWISS MADE"
  • Serial number; corresponds to UG production archive
  • Metal designation

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 285 and 287 are among the most copied vintage chronograph calibers; confirm movement caliber number matches case production era.
  • Column wheel advancement: each pusher press should click the wheel one position with a definite feel.
  • Chronograph reset should return all hands to zero simultaneously; a staggered reset suggests a worn or incorrectly serviced heart-cam.
