Aluminum tachymeter bezel scratches easily; inspect for dents or pry marks at the bezel edge.

Known issues in the market
  • Aluminum bezel (not ceramic) is correct for this reference; damage is common on used examples.

The Formula 1 Calibre 5 is TAG Heuer's entry-level automatic. It uses the same Calibre 5 (SW200-1 base) as the Carrera Date. The ceramic bezel and 200m water resistance are entry-level achievements. This reference is included as a benchmark -- collectors should know what TAG Heuer's entry tier looks like before evaluating premium references. The finishing level, movement spec, and case quality are all below the Carrera and Monaco lines.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Outright replicas are uncommon at this price point. The primary risk is misrepresentation of a quartz Formula 1 as a Calibre 5 automatic.

  • No seconds hand sweep -- the Calibre 5 is a sweeping automatic; a quartz variant ticks
  • Battery access cover on the caseback of a stated automatic -- the Calibre 5 has a solid caseback with no battery access
  • Case diameter inconsistent with 43mm

Quartz Formula 1 models are legitimate TAG products; the issue is paying an automatic premium for a quartz reference.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2020 to present (black, blue, white)Three primary dial colors. The case is larger at 43mm than the Carrera Date (41mm) and the bezel is ceramic with a tachymeter scale. The Formula 1 aesthetic is more casual and sporty than the Carrera.
  • 43mm case with a wider, more sporty proportion than the Carrera line
  • Ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale -- the same ceramic quality as higher TAG references, but the bezel function is a tachymeter, not a dive scale
  • Three-hand configuration with a date window at 3 o'clock
  • No sub-registers -- this is a time-and-date watch only
  • Rubber or metal bracelet options; rubber strap is the entry-tier standard

Service part flags

Calibre 5 movement

Original: Same Calibre 5 (SW200-1) as the Carrera Date. The Formula 1 and Carrera Date share this movement. No distinction between the two references at the movement level.

Replacement tells
  • Exhibition caseback -- the Formula 1 Calibre 5 uses a solid caseback
  • Power reserve shorter than 30 hours indicating a worn mainspring
Ceramic tachymeter bezel

Original: Ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale. The ceramic quality is the same as in the Aquaracer Professional 300. The bezel is unidirectional on dive-configured variants but the Formula 1 uses a fixed tachymeter bezel.

Replacement tells
  • Bezel that rotates -- the Formula 1 tachymeter bezel is fixed
  • Bezel insert that scratches easily (genuine ceramic resists steel tool marks)
  • Aluminum or resin insert in a stated ceramic bezel position

Case back markings

toggle
2020 to present
  • Solid caseback with "CALIBRE 5" designation
  • "TAG HEUER FORMULA 1" on the outer ring
  • Serial number on the case midband
  • 200M / 660FT water resistance rating

Movement tells

toggle
  • Calibre 5 (SW200-1 base), 28,800bph, 38 hours power reserve. Same movement as the Carrera Date. Reliable and well-supported by Sellita service infrastructure.
  • The Formula 1 Calibre 5 is one of the least-replicated TAG references because the price point does not justify the tooling investment for high-quality replicas.
  • Quickset date at crown position 2, clean click, no grinding.
