Authentication

Every Roger W. Smith piece has traceable provenance; the co-axial escapement wheel must be visible through the movement, and purchase without RWS workshop verification is inadvisable.

Known issues in the market
  • Fewer than 10 pieces per year across all references; provenance is verifiable for every piece.
  • The single-wheel co-axial escapement is the technical signature; any movement without a visible co-axial wheel is non-genuine.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Roger W. Smith Series 1 is a round 36mm dress watch with a co-axial escapement entirely made in-house on the Isle of Man, continuing George Daniels' tradition. Production is 10 to 15 watches per year total across all Series. No replica exists or is conceivable.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No known replica. The co-axial escapement, hand-made movement, and Isle of Man manufacture cannot be replicated. Any "Roger W. Smith" offered without original documentation from the workshop should be viewed with skepticism.

  • A standard lever escapement through the caseback immediately disqualifies a claimed Series 1
  • Single-metal balance wheel is inconsistent with Roger Smith specifications

Contact the Roger W. Smith workshop at +44 1624 843001 or through their official site to verify any serial number before purchase.

Co-axial escapement wheel

Original: The co-axial escapement is the defining mechanical feature: a three-level escape wheel with a separate impulse surface on the middle level. This is the escapement invented by George Daniels. The wheel architecture is visible through the caseback.

Replacement tells
  • A standard Swiss lever escapement (T-shaped pallet fork, single-level escape wheel) indicates a non-Roger Smith movement
  • Escape wheel with fewer than three levels visible from caseback is not a co-axial
Balance wheel

Original: The bi-metallic balance wheel uses two different metals to improve thermal compensation. The wheel should have a visible two-tone construction under magnification.

Replacement tells
  • Single-metal balance wheel without the bi-metallic inlay
  • Balance wheel with standard compensation screws rather than bi-metallic construction
Movement finishing

Original: Every Roger Smith movement is finished to the standard Daniels established: hand-filed chamfers on all bridges, polished bevels, flat-polished surfaces on plates, and hand-chamfered screw slots.

Replacement tells
  • Bridges with machine-chamfered edges lacking the crispness of hand filing
  • Screw slots that are not individually chamfered
  • Any bridge or plate with circular-grained rather than flat-polished finish where flat polish is specified

Case back markings

2010 to present
  • Individual serial number
  • "Roger W. Smith" designation
  • "Made in Isle of Man" text
  • Case material mark (750 for gold)
  • Series designation

Movement tells

toggle
  • Roger Smith issues a Certificate of Origin and service documentation with each watch; request these before purchase.
  • The co-axial escapement is lubricated differently from a standard lever; it uses minimal lubrication on the impulse surfaces. Over-lubrication from an inexperienced service is detectable by timing machine drift.
  • With 10 to 15 watches per year total production, each Roger Smith is traceable by serial number; contact the Roger W. Smith workshop directly to verify provenance.
