Winding feel must be smooth with very light resistance; binding during winding on an ultra-thin movement signals a service issue that is expensive to address.

Known issues in the market
  • Manual-wind ultra-thin movements require smooth, light winding resistance throughout the full wind stroke; any binding or roughness indicates a mainspring or gear train issue.
  • Total watch height around 5.34mm means any physical impact has a higher risk of movement damage than a standard-height watch.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Manual-wind ultra-thin movements should only be serviced by Piaget or a specialist with ultra-thin tools and experience.
  • Caseback gaskets are service parts; any evidence of caseback opening should be accompanied by service documentation.

The Altiplano 41mm Ultra-Thin uses the same caliber 1200P as the 38mm reference but in a slightly larger steel case at 5.25mm total height. This reference is the steel entry point to the ultra-thin automatic Altiplano. The distinction between the 38mm gold and 41mm steel variants is a common area of confusion in grey market listings.

Known reproduction risks

HIGH RISK

Non-ultra-thin movement

  • Case height measurably over 6mm
  • Movement bridges show standard automatic profile rather than ultra-thin
  • Rotor is non-gold or has non-Piaget geometry
MEDIUM

Reference confusion with 38mm gold Altiplano

  • Gold case instead of steel (which belongs to G0A39112)
  • Case measuring 38mm rather than 41mm
  • Reference number on caseback does not match G0A43001

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2016 to presentSilver or white dial with applied index markers. No date complication. "PIAGET" at 12, "SWISS MADE" at 6. The 41mm steel case is larger and in a different material than the 38mm gold Altiplano, with a polished bezel rather than the stepped Altiplano bezel on the gold references.
  • Steel case -- not gold as with the 38mm G0A39112
  • 41mm diameter -- larger than the 38mm variant
  • No date window
  • Applied index markers
  • Total case height 5.25mm -- extremely thin even compared to other dress watches
  • Polished steel bezel

Case material and size

Original: Steel case at 41mm. The 38mm gold Altiplano and the 41mm steel Altiplano share caliber 1200P but differ in case material, size, and case height (5.34mm for 38mm gold, 5.25mm for 41mm steel). These are distinct references.

Replacement tells
  • Gold-toned case on a watch claimed as the steel G0A43001
  • Case measuring 38mm rather than 41mm
  • Case height measurably above 6mm
Movement

Original: Caliber 1200P, identical to the 38mm gold variant. Display caseback with decorated bridges, 18k gold rotor, Cotes de Geneve. The movement is fully decorated as with all Piaget pieces.

Replacement tells
  • Undecorated movement bridges
  • Non-gold rotor
  • Movement height appearing thicker than expected for an ultra-thin caliber
