The L.U.C XPS is among the thinnest watches Chopard produces. Cal. 96.01-L uses a micro-rotor rather than a full-size rotor, which is the defining visual tell visible through the caseback. Any watch claiming to be an XPS with a full-size rotor is using a different caliber.

Outright L.U.C XPS replicas are uncommon. The specialist market and the difficulty of replicating the micro-rotor ultra-thin architecture limit replica production.

The L.U.C XPS in steel sits in the mid-five-figure range and attracts buyers who typically know the reference. Parts-mixing risk is very low. Movement swap risk is the primary concern.

Micro-rotor

Original: Cal. 96.01-L uses a 22-karat gold micro-rotor, not a full-size automatic rotor. The micro-rotor is small and positioned off-center on the movement. It is signed "L.U.C." The exhibition caseback makes this immediately visible.

Replacement tells
  • A full-size rotor visible through the caseback on a stated L.U.C XPS -- this indicates a movement swap to a different caliber entirely
  • Micro-rotor that is not engraved with "L.U.C." or lacks the 22k gold finish
  • Rotor that is not 18k or 22k gold, which would indicate a non-original movement component
Case height

Original: The XPS case is exceptionally thin. Any claimed XPS that looks thick when viewed from the side relative to known genuine examples requires measurement. The Geneva Seal requires movement height precision that eliminates thick movements.

Replacement tells
  • Case visually thicker than the approximately 6.1mm total case height of the genuine XPS
  • Exhibition caseback that shows a movement with a full-height rotor bridge rather than the micro-rotor configuration
Geneva Seal

Original: Cal. 96.01-L carries the Geneva Seal (Poincon de Geneve). The seal certifies finishing standards including chamfering, polishing, and surface preparation of each visible movement component. The certification is on the movement.

Replacement tells
  • Movement finishing under magnification that shows machine-uniform bevels without the hand-worked variability required by the Geneva Seal
  • Service documentation that does not reference the Geneva Seal on the L.U.C caliber

Movement tells

  • Cal. 96.01-L runs at 28,800bph with a 65-hour power reserve. The power reserve is substantial for a movement of this thickness; a watch stopping in under 50 hours warrants service.
  • The micro-rotor winds bidirectionally. Any lateral play in the rotor pivot is a wear indicator specific to the micro-rotor architecture, where the smaller bearing surface concentrates wear.
  • Geneva Seal finishing requires that bridges and plates show hand-chamfered edges with consistent bevel width. Under a loupe, genuine L.U.C movements show slight non-uniformity in bevel line that is the mark of hand work.
  • Chopard service intervals are typically 5 years. The ultra-thin movement is sensitive to lubricant degradation; a watch outside its service window should be timed on a timegrapher before purchase.
