Authentication

Micro gas tubes glow in total darkness without prior light exposure; any Ball Watch that requires prior light exposure to glow has non-genuine lume.

Known issues in the market
  • Micro gas tubes glow via tritium gas, not phosphorescent material; they require no prior light exposure.
  • COSC chronometer certification is genuine on Ball watches; verify COSC text on the dial or in the papers.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Engineer III Maverick uses Ball's tritium micro gas light tube system as its defining feature. Under a loupe, the tubes are visible as tiny glass cylinders embedded in the markers and hands. No other major production brand uses this system as a house signature.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Fake tritium tubes: paint dots or photo-luminescent lume substituted for actual tritium.

  • In a dark room, tritium glows immediately; lume that fades within an hour or requires charging is not tritium
  • Under a loupe (10x or more), genuine tritium tubes show a glass cylinder with a metal end cap; paint dots are flat
  • Failed tritium tubes dim but never charge up; if the lume brightens after UV exposure it is not tritium

Tritium glow test in a dark room is the single fastest authentication step for any Ball watch.

Tritium Tubes

Original: Self-luminous tritium gas tubes; glow green in darkness indefinitely without charging.

Replacement tells
  • Lume that requires charging (UV exposure) to glow is NOT tritium; tritium glows immediately in darkness
  • Tubes that appear as painted dots rather than glass cylinders under a loupe
  • Uneven glow intensity across markers (tubes have consistent output; failed tubes dim but don't brighten under UV)
Crown

Original: Ball Amortiser crown with rubber shock absorber; slightly wider than a standard crown.

Replacement tells
  • Standard ETA or generic crown without the Amortiser profile
  • Crown that does not have the characteristic resistance feel of the Amortiser mechanism

Case back markings

toggle
2015 to present
  • "BALL WATCH CO." on caseback
  • Model reference number engraved
  • "SELF-LUMINOUS TRITIUM GAS TUBES" on caseback or on a label inside
  • "SWISS MADE"
  • Serial number

Movement tells

toggle
  • Ball uses the ETA 2836-2 or 2824-2 base (Caliber RR1102 or similar Ball designation); confirm caliber against documentation.
  • The rotor should be Ball-signed; a generic ETA rotor indicates an unserviced movement or a movement swap.
  • Ball movements are regulated to high accuracy; a piece running more than +/-10 sec/day should be serviced.
