Authentication

The Geneva Seal guarantees hand-done finishing on every component; verify Geneva stripes and beveled edges on the RD821 movement under a loupe.

Known issues in the market
  • The Geneva Seal requires re-certification after each service; any Excalibur without current papers may have had an uncertified service.
  • Petal-cut skeletonized architecture must show Geneva stripes and beveling under a loupe; machine-regular finishing is non-compliant.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Excalibur 36 brings the skeleton automatic format into a 36mm case with the Geneva Seal-certified RD821 caliber. Authentication follows the same Geneva Seal finishing check as the larger Excalibur pieces.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Non-Geneva Seal skeleton movement in an Excalibur case shell.

  • Machine marks under loupe
  • Bevels brushed rather than polished
  • Petal-cut pattern inconsistent with the RD821 bridge layout
MEDIUM

Full-size rotor replacing the correct micro-rotor.

  • Large center-mounted rotor visible through caseback or skeleton dial opening

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2019 to presentPetal-cut skeleton dial with openwork through the full movement; RD821 automatic with micro-rotor; Arabic numeral chapter ring at the periphery.
  • Petal-cut openwork design: the dial apertures follow a petal or flower-blade shape rather than simple rectangular openings
  • Arabic numerals on the chapter ring are applied and stand proud of the ring surface
  • Case diameter 36mm; noticeably smaller than the 42 or 45mm Excalibur pieces
  • Round case with octagonal inner bezel ring, consistent across the Excalibur family

Service part flags

toggle
Geneva Seal finishing

Original: RD821 carries the Geneva Seal; same finishing standards as the larger Excalibur calibers: polished chamfers, circular graining, no machine marks.

Replacement tells
  • Machine marks under 5x loupe
  • Bevels not mirror-polished
  • Geneva Seal stamp absent on movement plate
Chapter ring numerals

Original: Applied Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions (or full set depending on variant); numerals are three-dimensional, not printed.

Replacement tells
  • Printed flat numerals on a flat ring
  • Numeral font inconsistent with the rest of the dial typography

Case back markings

toggle
2019 to present
  • Sapphire caseback showing RD821 caliber
  • Geneva Seal stamp on movement plate
  • Reference "RDDBEX0967" on inner case ring
  • "ROGER DUBUIS GENEVE" on movement bridge

Movement tells

toggle
  • The RD821 micro-rotor should oscillate smoothly in both directions; feel for roughness or a catch point.
  • Power reserve is 60 hours; a movement stopping before 48 hours from full wind indicates a service need.
  • Under loupe, the petal-cut bridges should have clean, polished edges all the way to the aperture perimeters; any rough edge at the skeleton opening indicates non-original finishing or a replacement movement.
