The Polaris Memovox is defined by its alarm function -- a non-functional alarm is the most significant red flag on any Memovox example. The acoustic resonator inside the case is audible and testable without opening the watch.

Known reproduction risks

Alarm mechanism

Original: The alarm hammer strikes the caseback from inside to produce the buzzing alert. This is mechanically testable: set the alarm to the current time and verify the alarm activates. A faint tapping sensation is felt through the case when the hammer runs.

Replacement tells
  • Alarm crown at 4 o'clock that turns but produces no activation at the set time -- non-functional alarm is a service item and significantly affects value
  • Alarm crown that turns but has no resistance in the winding direction -- indicates broken mainspring
  • No audible or tactile buzz at the set alarm time when the alarm crown is wound
Rotating bezel

Original: Rotating dive bezel with unidirectional click stops. The ratchet should engage firmly at each position with no slipping. The bezel numerals and markings should be crisp and resist standard wear.

Replacement tells
  • Bezel that slips rather than clicking into positive positions -- worn ratchet mechanism
  • Bidirectional bezel rotation on a stated production Polaris Memovox (the bezel should be unidirectional for dive safety)
  • Bezel markings that show significant wear inconsistent with the case condition
Dial gradient

Original: The gradient is produced during dial manufacturing, not printed. It should be consistent and deepen evenly from center to edge without banding or color breaks.

Replacement tells
  • Gradient with visible banding or uneven color transitions
  • Dial replacement visible as a gradient that is faded or inconsistently aged relative to the case
  • UV fading concentrated at one side of the dial (asymmetric aging indicates incorrect storage)

Modern Polaris revival
  • Solid caseback on most modern Polaris variants -- the acoustic resonance of the caseback is critical to the alarm function
  • "Polaris Memovox" text engraved or embossed on caseback
  • JLC serial number and reference engraved on the case band
  • A light tap on the caseback with a fingernail should allow the alarm hammer mechanism to be faintly felt when the watch is worn and the alarm is wound and running

Movement tells

  • Cal. 916 (vintage) uses a separate alarm mainspring that must be wound via the 4 o'clock crown. If this crown does not wind a distinct second mainspring, the alarm mechanism is not engaged.
  • The modern Polaris revival uses Cal. 956 or similar -- the alarm function is mechanically identical in principle: two separate mainsprings, one for timekeeping and one for the alarm.
  • Alarm duration is typically 15 to 20 seconds on a fully wound alarm spring. An alarm that cuts off immediately indicates a mainspring problem.
  • The alarm hammer runs against the caseback interior. A correctly functioning alarm should produce an audible buzz, not a single click.
  • JLC service centers can verify both mainspring conditions independently. A watch with a non-functional alarm that has not been serviced may simply need a new alarm mainspring, which is a straightforward repair.
