The soft-iron anti-magnetic cage is the original Ingenieur DNA; verify its presence through the caseback before purchase.
Known issues in the market
- The anti-magnetic soft-iron inner cage must be present; a missing cage is detectable through the caseback and undermines the watch's core value proposition.
- The 2023 reintroduction uses a Sellita SW300-1 base, which is deliberate at this price point; sellers should not misrepresent this as an in-house movement.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| caseback | Soft-iron anti-magnetic cage | Soft-iron inner cage visible surrounding the movement; Sellita SW300-1 architecture; IWC finishing applied | Missing anti-magnetic cage; non-Sellita architecture; undecorated movement indicating removed IWC finishing |
| dial | Ingenieur 2023 dial rendering | Correct dial proportions for 40mm case; IWC text rendering consistent with 2023 reintroduction specification | Dial from a different Ingenieur generation; text rendering inconsistent with 2023 specification |
| bracelet | Integrated bracelet fit | Integrated bracelet mates flush with the case; correct IWC clasp with Ingenieur branding | Bracelet that does not integrate flush; non-IWC clasp; bracelet from a different Ingenieur generation |
Common legitimate replacements
- Integrated bracelet is the primary configuration; verify flush fit and correct IWC clasp.
- The Sellita base is easy to service by any competent watchmaker; verify the anti-magnetic cage is replaced correctly after service.
Expert resources: IWC serial number verification. The anti-magnetic cage is the definitive 2023 Ingenieur check; any caseback photograph should show it clearly. WatchUSeek IWC forum for 2023 Ingenieur caseback documentation.

The IW328901 is the 2023 Ingenieur revival in a clean 40mm case, referencing the classic 1955 and 1976 designs. It uses Cal. 32000 (in-house, 120-hour power reserve) and a soft iron anti-magnetic cage. The minimalist dial and integrated bracelet are the immediate identifiers.
