Authentication

Each planet disc in the Grand Planetarium must rotate at its correct orbital period relative to the others; CVDK produces very few pieces per year and provenance with serial documentation is essential.

Known issues in the market
  • CVDK pieces are extremely rare; any example without original documentation and serial number matching requires specialist authentication.

The Grand Planetarium Eccentric uses an Andreas Strehler base movement combined with CVDK's proprietary planetarium module. At 44mm it is larger than the Planetarium Eise Eisinga, and the eccentric time display shifts the hour/minute indication away from center to accommodate the planetary display. The movement architecture combining Strehler base and CVDK module is the defining technical characteristic.

Simplified planetarium presented as Grand Planetarium Eccentric

  • Centered time display rather than eccentric sub-dial layout
  • Planetary indicators at incorrect astronomical positions
  • Single movement layer through caseback rather than base plus CVDK module

The Grand Planetarium Eccentric has no replica market. Its production complexity, combined with individual serial documentation from CVDK, makes provenance verification straightforward for any serious transaction.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2024 to presentBlue dial with eccentric time display and expanded solar system planetarium. The time is displayed off-center, typically in the upper or lower sector, leaving the central dial area for the planetary complication.
  • Eccentric time display: hours and minutes are shown off-center, with the central dial area devoted to the planetarium complication
  • Full planetarium with planet indicators arranged on the open dial area
  • "GRAND PLANETARIUM ECCENTRIC" or similar text on the dial
  • "CHRISTIAAN VAN DER KLAAUW" designation
  • Rose gold or platinum case at 44mm: noticeably larger than the 40mm Planetarium Eise Eisinga
  • Blue dial consistent with the CVDK astronomical range

Eccentric time display

Original: The hours and minutes are displayed via an off-center sub-dial rather than a conventional centered display. The eccentric layout is the specific design choice that gives this model its name.

Replacement tells
  • Centered time display -- any Grand Planetarium with conventional centered hands is not the Eccentric variant
  • Eccentric display that does not correspond to the correct time when the planetary indicators are at their correct positions
Strehler base movement with CVDK planetarium module

Original: The base caliber is by Andreas Strehler, a respected independent Swiss movement maker. The CVDK planetarium complication module is added above the base movement. The two-layer construction is visible through the caseback as distinct module layers.

Replacement tells
  • Single-layer movement without a distinct complication module visible through caseback
  • Movement without "Andreas Strehler" or "Strehler" designation on the base movement plates
  • Planetary indicators that do not advance at astronomically correct orbital rates

Case back markings

toggle
2024 to present
  • "CHRISTIAAN VAN DER KLAAUW" on caseback
  • Strehler base movement designation
  • "CVDK" planetarium module designation
  • Serial number
  • Case material (rose gold or platinum)
  • Water resistance specification

Movement tells

toggle
  • Power reserve is 60 hours. Consistent running below 50 hours indicates mainspring service in the Strehler base caliber.
  • The planetary indicators should correspond to astronomically correct positions verifiable against current almanac data. Any discrepancy greater than several degrees indicates the planetary module needs resetting by a trained CVDK-authorized watchmaker.
