Authentication

The in-house Cal. 28 bridges must show hand-done Cotes de Geneve with natural variation under a loupe; machine-regular finishing is not consistent with Voutilainen standards.

Known issues in the market
  • Cal. 28 is the in-house caliber family; the architecture through the caseback is proprietary and distinctive.
  • Machine-regular Geneva stripes indicate a non-genuine or refinished movement.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Vingt-8 is Voutilainen's core reference: a 38.5mm dress watch powered by the Cal. 28 movement with 28 jewels. Production is approximately 50 watches per year total across all references. No replica exists; provenance and dealer documentation are the authentication foundation.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No known replica of the Vingt-8 exists. The movement architecture, dial finishing, and hand polishing are impossible to replicate at any production scale outside Voutilainen's atelier.

  • Any Vingt-8 with a dial lacking the characteristic lacquer depth should be examined by an authorized dealer
  • Movement finishing inconsistencies are the primary tell if a watch has been tampered with

The real risk is purchasing an example with undisclosed service history or a replaced dial. Voutilainen can confirm serial number provenance directly.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2011 to presentSilver lacquered or engraved dial with Roman numeral chapter ring. Small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock. Dial materials include natural silver, salmon, white, black, and blue lacquer. Some examples feature fired enamel chapter rings.
  • Cal. 28 designation typically visible on movement at service
  • Small seconds at 6 o'clock
  • Slender hands with blued or polished finish depending on dial color
  • "Voutilainen" printed at 12 o'clock; "Môtiers" or just country at 6 o'clock
  • Unique serial number on each example

Dial

Original: Voutilainen dials are made by independent dial specialists to Voutilainen's specification. The silver lacquer has a depth and luminosity not replicated by printed dials. Enamel chapter rings show surface texture distinct from painted rings.

Replacement tells
  • Dial surface with flat or matte finish inconsistent with the lacquer depth of authentic examples
  • Printed chapter ring without enamel surface texture
  • Font inconsistency on "Voutilainen" text under magnification
  • Subdial ring that appears applied rather than integral
Hands

Original: Hands are hand-filed and polished. The baton hands on Vingt-8 have a distinctive taper with mirror polish on the top surface and brushed sides.

Replacement tells
  • Hands with uniform machine finish rather than a hand-polished top surface
  • Lume plots inconsistent with the original specification
Movement (Cal. 28)

Original: The Cal. 28 is entirely in-house. Bridges are curved and finished with Cotes de Geneve, hand-beveled edges, and polished screws with flat heads. The architecture is directly recognizable to any trained eye.

Replacement tells
  • Non-beveled bridge edges or rough chamfer finish
  • Screws with domed heads (Cal. 28 uses flat-head screws)
  • Movement signed by a different maker

Case back markings

toggle
2011 to present
  • Individual serial number hand-engraved or laser-engraved on caseback
  • "Voutilainen" name on caseback
  • Case material designation (750 for gold; ACIER or St for steel; Pt for platinum)
  • Country designation for export compliance

Movement tells

toggle
  • The Cal. 28 is a direct-impulse lever escapement with 28 jewels. Service intervals are long by independent standards; a watch that runs poorly within 5 years of original delivery warrants inspection.
  • Movement finishing on authentic examples is exceptional under magnification: mirror-polished screw heads, sharp bevels on bridge edges, and Cotes de Geneve stripes that run perfectly parallel.
  • Any evidence of non-factory service (watch cleaning compound residue, bent or replaced screws) should prompt a full Voutilainen-authorized service before purchase.
