Authentication

All three time zones must be independently settable; tegimented case resists normal scratching.

Known issues in the market
  • ETA 2893-2 GMT hand must advance in 1-hour increments independent of main hour hand.
  • Tegimented steel resists normal scratches; deep scratches indicate hard-object contact.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 856 UTC is a pilot GMT built around the ETA 2893-2, with a distinctive 24-hour hand for a second time zone. The main authentication concern is correct hand configuration and caseback technology markings; replica exposure is low.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The 856 UTC has minimal replica exposure. The primary risk is incorrect or missing GMT hands from damage or amateur servicing, misrepresented as original.

  • Missing or incorrect 24-hour GMT hand
  • Caseback without Sinn technology text on a variant that should carry it
  • Non-screw-down crown on a stated 200M water-resistant example

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2009 to presentMatte black pilot dial with Arabic numerals, 24-hour scale for GMT reading, date at 3. Pilot-style layout with large luminous Arabic numerals and a prominent 24-hour hand.
  • Full Arabic numeral chapter ring with 24-hour scale around the outer portion of the dial
  • Additional 24-hour hand (typically with a triangular or differently colored tip) for the second time zone
  • "UTC" text on the dial indicating the second-zone complication
  • "SINN" and "856 UTC" on the dial in white text
  • Date window at 3 o'clock
  • Matte black dial with high-contrast white printing -- no glossy elements

Service part flags

toggle
GMT hand

Original: The 24-hour GMT hand is a third hand co-axial with the hour and minute hands. It completes one revolution per 24 hours. The hand design is distinct from the main hour hand. Both hands must be present for the watch to read correctly.

Replacement tells
  • Missing 24-hour hand on a stated UTC example -- the GMT function is the defining complication
  • A 24-hour hand that does not advance at half the speed of the hour hand -- set both hands to 12 and observe for 12 hours; the GMT hand should reach 6 while the hour hand returns to 12
  • GMT hand with incorrect color or luminous fill relative to the production specification
Bezel

Original: Fixed brushed steel bezel with no rotation. The 856 UTC is not a unidirectional dive bezel watch. The bezel provides a 24-hour scale or timing reference depending on the variant.

Replacement tells
  • Bezel that rotates -- the 856 UTC has a fixed bezel; any rotation indicates a non-original bezel swap
  • Aftermarket rotating bezel insert from a different Sinn family fitted to this reference
  • Bezel text or scale markings inconsistent with the 856 UTC specification
Crown

Original: Screw-down crown with standard Sinn profile. The crown has two functional positions: time set and winding. The GMT hand adjustment is managed by the quickset crown positions in the ETA 2893-2.

Replacement tells
  • Crown that does not screw down -- the 856 UTC uses a screw-down crown for 200M water resistance
  • Crown with no tactile distinction between positions when pulled -- the 2893-2 has two pull positions
  • Crown with visible thread damage or inability to seat fully against the crown tube

Case back markings

toggle
2009 to present
  • "SINN SPEZIALUHREN" and "GERMANY" text on the caseback
  • "856 UTC" reference identification
  • "WATER RESIST 200M" depth rating
  • Argon gas fill notation on caseback (some variants): "AR-DEHUMIDIFICATION" or similar Sinn technology text
  • Serial number on caseback or case band

Movement tells

toggle
  • ETA 2893-2 beats at 28,800bph with a 42-hour power reserve. A fully wound 856 UTC stopping before 36 hours warrants service.
  • The GMT hand should advance in one-hour increments when the quickset crown position is used -- not in partial or fractional steps, which would indicate a worn quickset mechanism.
  • Date change at midnight should be crisp. The 2893-2 quickset date should advance cleanly with a crown push in the quickset position.
  • The 2893-2 is a well-documented caliber with excellent parts availability. Any replacement movement should be the same caliber; the bridge layout is distinctive and different from related ETA calibers.
