Authentication

The stepped chapter ring profile and the "King Seiko" dial text font are the two reference-specific authentication points.

Known issues in the market
  • SPB291 dial text font and chapter ring profile are specific to this reference; other SPB Prospex references have different dial layouts.
  • The King Seiko sub-branding position on the dial is precise; any offset text is a counterfeit indicator.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Dials from other SPB Prospex references are occasionally fitted; chapter ring profile and text font confirm the SPB291.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The SPB291 King Seiko reissue is a dress-sport watch referencing the 1960s King Seiko design, with a sharply finished case and a refined dial. Cal. 6R35 inside. The case finishing quality (zaratsu-adjacent polishing on flat surfaces) is the primary authentication anchor. This is not a mainstream reproduction target.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The King Seiko reissue is not a high-volume reproduction target. Condition and case finishing quality are the relevant inspection points.

  • Rounded case transitions where sharp finishing should be
  • Caseback with an incorrect reference number
  • Lower-tier 4R35 movement designation on the caseback

  • Fully brushed or fully polished case without the contrast finishing
  • Lug shape that does not match the stepped 1960s King Seiko profile
Dial

Original: Clean sunburst or textured dial with applied indices and no lume on some variants. Consistent with the dress heritage of the original King Seiko.

Replacement tells
  • Applied indices with inconsistent heights
  • Lume on indices where none should appear (check the specific colorway)
Hands

Original: Slim sword-style hands with clean polished surfaces.

Replacement tells
  • Hands with lume plots inconsistent with the dial
  • Hands from a sport Seiko with wider proportions
Caseback

Original: Solid caseback with SPB291J1 reference number and Cal. 6R35 designation.

Replacement tells
