Authentication

The hand-finished lug facets are the sole authentication; any rounding at 10x magnification means the watch has been polished.

Known issues in the market
  • Polishing at service removes the hand-applied sharp facets; this is irreversible and significantly reduces collector value.
  • Under-lug areas are the first surfaces to show polishing rounding; examine with a loupe before any surface inspection.
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag

caseUnder-lug surface transitionsFactory brushed surfaces meet polished facets at a clean visible lineBlurred transition line under the lug; first sign of polishing damage
Common legitimate replacements
  • Case polishing is the most damaging service action for the Sharp Edged line; confirm no polishing before purchase.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The SPB169 is the flagship Sharp Edged reference with a blue arita-porcelain-inspired dial and a hand-finished faceted case. The case planes are the primary authentication point: each facet should have a distinct mirror polish from hand-finishing. Reproductions are uncommon, but the case finishing quality is the clearest tell between an original and an imitation.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Sharp Edged series does not attract high-volume reproduction makers because the hand-finished case is expensive to approximate. The primary risk is misrepresented condition rather than outright non-original examples.

  • Case planes that are rounded or machine-polished rather than hand-finished
  • Lug facets with visible polishing scratches that were not buffed through hand-finishing

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2020 to presentBlue textured dial inspired by arita porcelain or Japanese swordcraft aesthetics. The dial surface has a stepped or faceted texture visible under magnification. The case shares the sharp-plane design language.
  • Blue textured dial with a faceted or layered surface visible under magnification
  • Applied silver-tone sword indices with sharp cut edges
  • Date window at 3, no magnifier
  • "PRESAGE" and "AUTOMATIC" text, "SHARP EDGED SERIES" designation on some variants
  • Faceted case with distinct mirror-polished planes on the lugs and case sides

Service part flags

toggle
Case

Original: The Sharp Edged case has multiple flat, mirror-polished facets on the lugs and case sides. The facets meet at sharp transitions with no rounding. This finishing is done by hand and is time-intensive; no machine-finished case will replicate it correctly.

Replacement tells
  • Rounded transitions between case planes where sharp edges should be
  • Facet surfaces that are not fully mirror-polished, showing brushed or satin texture
  • Inconsistent facet depth between the left and right sides of a lug
Dial

Original: The textured blue dial has a layered depth that is visible under magnification. The texture is consistent across the dial surface without voids or flat spots.

Replacement tells
  • Flat blue surface without the tactile-looking texture
  • Texture that is inconsistent across the dial, with flat spots near the edges
Hands

Original: Sword-style hands with sharp cut edges on the hand faces, consistent with the case finishing philosophy. The hour and minute hands have faceted surfaces.

Replacement tells
  • Hands with rounded rather than faceted edges
  • Hands from a different Presage sub-line with incorrect profile
Crown

Original: Push-pull crown at 3 o'clock. The crown knurling is fine and consistent.

Replacement tells
  • Crown with coarse or inconsistent knurling
  • Screw-down crown, incorrect for this reference

Case back markings

toggle
2020 to present
  • SPB169J1 reference number
  • "100M" water resistance designation
  • "PRESAGE" designation
  • Cal. 6R35 designation
  • Seiko S logo

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 6R35 at 28,800 bph; 70-hour power reserve. Hackable and manually windable.
  • The caseback is solid. Any display caseback is non-original.
  • The movement caliber designation should read 6R35 on the caseback. A 4R35 or 6R15 designation indicates a lower-tier movement swap.
