Authentication

The RD620 micro-rotor must be visible within the skeletonized movement; any Excalibur 42 Auto Skeleton with a full-size rotor has a different or non-genuine movement.

Known issues in the market
  • Discontinued 2020; any example offered as new production is dealer old stock or misdescribed.
  • Geneva Seal finishing standards apply; verify under a loupe.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Excalibur 42 Automatic Skeleton carries the Geneva Seal, which mandates specific movement finishing standards. Authentication centers on the finishing quality under loupe: polished bevels, circular graining, and the absence of machine marks.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Non-Geneva Seal movement with standard finishing presented as an Excalibur.

  • Machine marks under loupe on bridge surfaces
  • Bevels not mirror-polished
  • No Geneva Seal stamp on movement

The Geneva Seal is legally verifiable through the Cantonal authorities of Geneva in principle, though in practice brand authentication is faster.

MEDIUM

Full-size rotor replacing the correct micro-rotor architecture.

  • Large rotor center-mounted on the movement
  • Caseback profile bulges more than genuine due to rotor thickness

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2014 to 2020Skeleton dial showing RD620 micro-rotor automatic movement; round Excalibur case with octagonal inner bezel ring; hands are skeletonized.
  • Round case with octagonal decorative inner structure: both elements present on genuine Excalibur
  • "EXCALIBUR" lettering on the skeleton dial or movement bridge visible through the opening
  • Micro-rotor (small peripheral rotor) visible through dial or caseback rather than a full-size rotor

Movement finishing (Geneva Seal)

Original: The Geneva Seal (Poincon de Geneve) requires: polished bevels on all bridges and plates; circular graining (Cotes de Geneve) on horizontal surfaces; polished anglage on all angles; no machine marks visible under 5x loupe.

Replacement tells
  • Machine marks visible under 5x loupe on any bridge or plate surface
  • Bevels are flat or brushed rather than mirror-polished
  • Circular graining absent or replaced with linear brushing on movement plates
Micro-rotor

Original: Small peripheral rotor mounted at the perimeter of the movement plate; oscillates within the movement footprint without protruding above the bridges.

Replacement tells
  • Full-size rotor occupying the center of the movement: not the RD620 architecture
  • No rotor visible (movement is automatic, not manual-wind)

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to 2020
  • Sapphire caseback showing RD620 caliber in detail
  • Geneva Seal stamp on movement; look for the cantonal eagle of Geneva
  • "ROGER DUBUIS GENEVE" on movement bridges
  • Reference "RDDBEX0396" or variant on inner case ring

Movement tells

toggle
  • Under 5x loupe, every angle on every bridge should show a mirror-polished chamfer; the Geneva Seal standard is uncompromising on this point.
  • The micro-rotor should oscillate with minimal friction in both directions; a micro-rotor that catches or requires an aggressive wrist motion is worn.
  • Power reserve of 60 hours from full wind; a movement that stops before 48 hours from full wind has a compromised mainspring or barrel.
