The large 48mm case makes crystal edge chips more common; inspect the full crystal perimeter before purchase.

Known issues in the market
  • Crystal edge chips are more common on the large 48mm case due to the increased surface area exposed to impact.
  • Cal. 82100 Pellaton winding with ceramic bearings must be confirmed through the caseback.

The IW324703 Pilot's Watch Heritage 48 references the 1948 "Mark 11" pilot watch used by the Royal Air Force. It is a 48mm watch with a manual-wind Cal. 59210 (7-day power reserve) and a bold, large-numeral black dial. The 48mm diameter makes it one of the largest standard IWC references.

Known reproduction risks

MEDIUM

Replica Pilot Heritage 48 watches with incorrect movement type

  • Manual-wind function is the fastest test; an automatic that winds with wrist motion is immediately incorrect
  • The 7-day power reserve scale at 3 o'clock is often replaced with a 48-hour scale on replicas
  • 48mm case size on replicas is frequently slightly under or over; the genuine case is precisely 48mm
  • Soft iron cage absent on most replicas

Dial variants by era

  • 48mm case diameter; significantly larger than the standard Pilot Marks
  • Manual-wind; no automatic rotor
  • Large Arabic numerals designed for maximum legibility

  • Soft iron anti-magnetic inner case (Pilot line heritage)

Service part flags

Crown

Original: The oversized crown at 3 is a manual-wind crown; it has a screw-down mechanism and is proportionally very large for the 48mm case.

Replacement tells
  • A smaller crown that does not match the scale of the 48mm case
  • A crown with a signed logo that does not correspond to IWC markings
  • Crown that does not screw down to the case tube
Movement

Original: Cal. 59210 is a 7-day manual-wind movement. It is related to the Cal. 59215 used in the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days but adapted for the Pilot Heritage case.

Replacement tells
  • Any automatic movement in the stated Heritage 48; this is a manual-wind-only reference
  • Power reserve indicator that does not show 7 days of remaining reserve when fully wound

Case back markings

toggle
2009 to present
  • Solid steel caseback
  • Engraved: IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN with reference IW324703 and serial
  • "SINCE 1948" tribute text on some variants
  • Soft iron anti-magnetic inner case visible when caseback is opened

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 59210 is manual-wind with 7 days of power reserve. A fully wound watch should run for 7 days; verify this before purchase if possible.
  • The movement is architecturally similar to Cal. 59215; an exhibition caseback on custom-order examples shows the movement. The absence of a rotor is the key visual tell.
  • The soft iron cage is present and should be intact; damage to the cage compromises the anti-magnetic protection.
