Authentication

The stepped cushion case is entirely GP-specific; sharp step definition is the first authentication check.

Known issues in the market
  • The stepped bezel on the Vintage 1945 must have sharp transitions between the upper and lower step; polishing rounds these steps and destroys the design intent.
  • No other GP line shares this cushion case profile; a Vintage 1945 case shape on a different movement is not possible in legitimate production.
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag
caseCushion case stepped bezel definitionSharp right-angle step between upper and lower bezel levels; no rounding at the step transitionRounded or blended step; soft transition from upper to lower bezel indicates polishing or replica production
caseCushion corner roundingConsistent rounded corners on all four sides of the cushion; symmetrical from any angleAsymmetrical corner rounding; any corner that is sharper or more rounded than the others
movementCal. GP03300-0100 via casebackExhibition caseback showing in-house GP movement with full decorationNon-GP movement; any caliber other than GP03300-0100 or its variants
Common legitimate replacements
  • Stepped bezel polishing is irreversible; step definition loss significantly reduces collector value.
  • Leather straps are frequently replaced; factory GP straps for the 1945 have a specific taper and signed buckle.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Vintage 1945 uses a distinctive rectangular cushion case derived from the original 1945 design. The movement is specifically shaped to fit the case architecture, which is the most reliable authenticity check -- no generic movement fits a genuine 1945 case.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Replicas of rectangular cushion case watches are uncommon given the tooling complexity. Any suspected replica should be measured against the known 36mm x 35.4mm case dimensions.

  • Case dimensions that do not match the known Vintage 1945 XXL format
  • Round movement visible through the caseback in a stated 1945
  • Crystal that is domed where the genuine example uses a flat sapphire

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
Current Vintage 1945 XXL AutomaticRectangular cushion case with rounded corners. Vertical brushed rectangular dial, applied baton indices aligned to the rectangular format.
  • Rectangular case with rounded corners at each corner of the rectangle, giving the "cushion" silhouette
  • Vertically brushed rectangular dial with applied indices at consistent spacing
  • "Girard-Perregaux" and "Vintage 1945" text in the correct typeface
  • Date window at 6 o'clock on date variants, integrated into the rectangular dial format
  • Flat sapphire crystal with no dome -- the rectangular case requires a flat or very slightly curved crystal

Rectangular case

Original: The cushion rectangle is not perfectly square. The horizontal dimension is slightly longer than the vertical. Case construction requires the lugs to emerge naturally from the rectangular form. The case thickness is moderate given the rectangular movement.

Replacement tells
  • A case that is perfectly square rather than the slightly wider rectangle of the 1945 format
  • Lugs that appear bolted on or discontinuous with the case body
  • Case with any octagonal or round elements -- the 1945 is exclusively rectangular
Movement

Original: Cal. GP03300-0100 is shaped to complement the rectangular case architecture. Viewing through the exhibition caseback, the movement plates will show a non-round geometry matching the case interior.

Replacement tells
  • A round movement visible through the caseback in a stated Vintage 1945 -- no round movement fits this case correctly
  • Movement plates without Côtes de Genève striping
  • Non-GP movement caliber identity visible on the movement or service documentation

Case back markings

toggle
Current production
  • Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. GP03300-0100
  • "Girard-Perregaux" and "Genève" on the movement
  • Reference 25882-11-221-BB6B on the case band
  • Rectangular case back with same cushion geometry as the front

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. GP03300-0100 is shaped for the tonneau/rectangular case. The movement plates are visible through the caseback and should clearly show non-round geometry.
  • Power reserve is 54 hours at 28,800bph. The rate on a timegrapher should be stable; a rectangular movement is inherently more sensitive to positional variation than a round one.
  • Côtes de Genève striping on the plates should be parallel to the long axis of the movement.
