The "Real Moon" designation means a 99.998% accurate moon phase that advances 29.5 days per cycle; an advance of exactly 30 days is a simpler approximate mechanism and a different or non-genuine display.

Known issues in the market
  • Setting and timing the moon phase over a full cycle is the definitive test; approximate mechanisms advance 30 days instead of 29.5.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Real Moon Joure uses a moonphase disc printed or etched with actual NASA photography of the lunar surface rather than a stylized moon illustration. The photographic disc is immediately distinguishable from the conventional stylized moon. CVDK's extremely small production means provenance documentation is a primary authentication tool.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Conventional moonphase disc presented as photographic Real Moon

  • Moonphase disc without photographic surface detail -- a stylized or plain disc does not have the crater and mare texture of the Real Moon
  • Moon image that is a conventional Swiss moonphase illustration (typically showing only visible crescent and terminator)

CVDK is not replicated in any meaningful volume. The production complexity and small market make counterfeiting economically unjustifiable. Provenance and condition are the primary pre-purchase concerns.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2014 to presentDial with day, date, and moonphase complications. The moonphase aperture shows the lunar surface disc with photographic surface detail. Available in blue, green, and black dial variations.
  • Moonphase disc with photographic NASA lunar surface imagery: visible crater detail, mare regions, and surface texture distinguishable at normal viewing distance
  • No stylized or illustrative moon rendering -- the Real Moon Joure uses actual photographic reproduction, not an artistic illustration
  • Day and date complications alongside the moonphase, consistent with Cal. CVDK7382
  • "CHRISTIAAN VAN DER KLAAUW" on the dial, typically in a small but legible typeface
  • "REAL MOON" designation printed on the dial near the moonphase aperture

Moonphase disc

Original: The disc carries a photographic reproduction of the lunar surface, printed or etched at high resolution. The image is a true-scale representation of the actual moon's near-side surface. The disc advance mechanism moves the moon through the aperture in synchronization with the lunar cycle (29.5 days).

Replacement tells
  • Stylized or illustrated moon on the disc -- any non-photographic rendering indicates a non-original disc
  • Disc without visible crater and mare detail consistent with NASA lunar surface imagery
  • Moonphase display that does not synchronize with the actual lunar cycle
Movement (Cal. CVDK7382)

Original: Automatic, 96-hour power reserve. The movement is calibrated for the lunar cycle with high accuracy. Exhibition caseback shows the movement construction.

Replacement tells
  • Power reserve materially below 90 hours from full wind -- the CVDK7382 is specified at 96 hours
  • No automatic rotor visible through caseback -- Cal. CVDK7382 is automatic

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to present
  • "CHRISTIAAN VAN DER KLAAUW" on caseback
  • "CAL. CVDK7382" movement designation
  • Serial number (very small production)
  • Water resistance specification

Movement tells

toggle
  • Power reserve is 96 hours. The watch should run approximately 96 hours from full wind without wearing. Dropping below 80 hours consistently indicates mainspring or winding mechanism service.
  • The moonphase should track the actual lunar cycle with reasonable accuracy over a calendar month. Any visible deviation of more than 1 day per month from the actual moon phase indicates the moonphase disc advance needs adjustment.
