The SPB153J1 is Seiko's faithful re-creation of the 6105 worn by Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, a watch that spent years as a cult grail before Seiko made it easy to own. At 42.7mm it wears larger and more dramatic than the 1965 Alpinist-inspired re-creation, and the rotating bezel and 200m water resistance give it legitimate dive credentials to match the film mythos.

What it is

The original 6105-8110 appeared in the late 1960s as Seiko's professional diver for export markets, a rugged tool watch that found its way onto Martin Sheen's wrist during the filming of Apocalypse Now in 1976. That association was largely accidental at the time, but decades of collector attention turned the 6105 into one of the most sought-after vintage Seikos. Seiko released the SPB153J1 in 2020 as a direct homage, replicating the cushion-influenced case shape, the external rotating bezel, and the signature curved crystal profile.

The 6R35 movement replaces the original 6105 caliber but otherwise the watch stays honest to the proportions and aesthetic that made the original matter.

Buying notes

The 42.7mm case reads larger than the number suggests due to the cushion case and high-domed crystal, so wrist-try before committing if you run small. Early production examples had some reported inconsistency in dial finishing quality, with occasional patches in the sunburst texture near the chapter ring. The external rotating bezel has a 60-click action that some owners find slightly loose compared to higher-priced competitors at the same water resistance rating.

The lume application is good but not exceptional; expect less long-duration glow than a modern Seiko Prospex diver at higher price points. This is a J-suffix domestic Japanese market reference, so grey market sourcing is the primary buying channel outside Japan, which affects warranty coverage.

Seiko recommends a full service every three years for water resistance integrity given the 200m rating, which is worth following if you actually dive with it.
