The chapter ring bezel and Cal. 6R35 hacking function are the two non-negotiable checks on any Willard re-creation.
- Chapter ring bezel inserts are swapped from other Prospex references; pip and numeral proportions differ per variant.
- Cal. 6R35 hacking (seconds stop at crown pull) is sometimes defeated by debris in the setting mechanism; a non-hacking 6R35 is incorrect.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| case | Chapter ring bezel insert pip and numeral proportions | Pip is a small filled circle with numerals at consistent spacing per the Willard reference spec | Pip shape, size, or numeral spacing differs from factory; insert transplanted from another Prospex variant |
| movement | Cal. 6R35 hacking function | Seconds hand stops cleanly when crown is pulled to time-set position | Seconds continue running with crown pulled; hacking mechanism is defeated or missing |
- Chapter ring bezel inserts from other Prospex references are occasionally fitted; verify the pip and numeral spec matches the SPB149/SPB153.
Authentication guide
Listed as SPB149 in the catalog but the reference number resolves to SPB153J1, the 1970 Willard re-creation. The Willard is a 42.7mm cushion-adjacent case with a black dial referencing the watch worn in Apocalypse Now. Cal. 6R35 inside. The large case and distinctive dial font are the primary authentication points.
