Authentication

The Korona moonphase disc must show the correct current phase; verify by setting and advancing through a full 29.5-day cycle to confirm the module tracks correctly.

Known issues in the market
  • The moonphase disc is a hand-crafted Sarpaneva module; any disc that appears machine-regular may be a non-genuine replacement.
  • The crown-shaped case aperture is the visual identity of the Korona; verify its presence and correct profile.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Korona K0 is Finnish watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva's automatic moonphase piece. The signature element is the moonphase disc, which features a hand-painted bear silhouette unique to each watch. The moonphase module sits atop a Soprod A10 automatic base.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Extremely low production numbers make reproduction economically pointless. Condition and provenance are the evaluation focus.

  • Bear silhouette that appears printed or mechanically reproduced rather than hand-painted
  • Caseback without the Sarpaneva identification expected on a genuine piece

Due diligence means verifying provenance through purchase documentation given the rarity.

Moonphase disc (bear silhouette)

Original: Each bear silhouette is hand-painted by Sarpaneva, making every disc unique. The bear appears in profile on the moonphase disc against a night sky. Under magnification, brush strokes may be visible on the painted bear.

Replacement tells
  • Printed or etched bear without visible hand-painted texture under magnification
  • Bear silhouette with uniform mechanical-looking edges rather than brushwork
  • Moonphase disc without the characteristic Sarpaneva bear design
Movement (Soprod A10 with moonphase module)

Original: Soprod A10 automatic with a custom moonphase module developed by Sarpaneva. The module adds the bear-disc moonphase indicator driven from the base caliber.

Replacement tells
  • Movement without Soprod A10 identification through caseback
  • Moonphase module absent or replaced with a generic display

Case back markings

toggle
2010 to present
  • "SARPANEVA" and Finnish maker identification
  • Soprod A10 base caliber notation
  • Serial number (very low production numbers)
  • Steel case notation

Movement tells

toggle
  • Soprod A10 power reserve is approximately 42 hours. Below 36 hours from full wind needs service.
  • Moonphase accuracy: the bear-disc should advance once per day. Any visible jumping or slipping at the moonphase aperture indicates module service.
