The wire-lug Radiomir 1940 is a cleaner design than the Luminor and attracts collectors who find the cushion case more elegant; secondary prices are somewhat lower than comparable Luminors.

Wire lug attachment is the defining Radiomir characteristic; any Radiomir with spring-bar lugs has been modified.

Known issues in the market
  • Wire bail lug attachment must be original; spring-bar modification is irreversible and destroys originality.
  • Cal. P.3001 manual-wind with small seconds and power reserve; verify through caseback.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Radiomir 1940 3 Days (PAM00662) is a historically faithful reissue of the 1940s military watch case, characterized by wire lugs soldered to the case body rather than the drilled-through lugs of later Panerai designs. The absence of the crown-protecting device immediately distinguishes this from any Luminor reference.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Replicas with flat-printed dials and standard crown/stem assemblies rather than the correct wire-lug case geometry. The 47mm size attracts replica production due to the large case being easier to manufacture at rough tolerances.

  • Dial numerals with no depth under loupe -- flat print rather than aperture sandwich
  • Lugs that are solid and drilled through rather than wire loops
  • Crown-protecting lever present on a stated Radiomir -- this would be a Luminor
  • Case dimensions inconsistent with the 47mm / 17.2mm height specification

The wire lug is difficult to fake convincingly at quality. Inspect the lug-to-case junction first on any secondary market Radiomir 1940 example.

MEDIUM

Earlier PAM numbers or non-1940 Radiomir cases presented as the 1940 reissue, typically to command a premium for the wire-lug aesthetic.

  • Lugs that are solid drilled-through on a stated 1940 reissue
  • Case profile that lacks the specific cushion geometry of the 1940 reissue
  • PAM reference number on the caseback inconsistent with PAM00662

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
PAM00662 production (2014 to 2019)Sandwich dial in black, 47mm cushion case with wire lugs, traditional crown without bridge, small seconds at 9.
  • No crown-protecting lever: the Radiomir uses a traditional crown without the bridge mechanism. Any Radiomir with a Luminor-style lever is incorrectly described or is a different reference
  • Wire lugs: the lug-to-case attachment is a thin wire loop rather than solid machined lugs. The wire is visible at the transition between lug and case
  • Sandwich dial with aperture-cut numerals revealing lume substrate below
  • "RADIOMIR" and "PANERAI" text in the correct typeface
  • "P.3001" caliber designation on the dial for this reference
  • Small seconds at 9 o'clock
  • Case diameter 47mm -- larger and more commanding than the Quaranta 40mm

Wire lugs

Original: The Radiomir 1940 case uses wire lugs soldered to the case body, replicating the 1940 military specification. The wire should be of consistent gauge, fully secured with no visible gap at the case junction, and finished to match the case metal.

Replacement tells
  • Lugs that are solid drilled-through rather than wire loops -- indicates a standard Panerai case, not the 1940 reissue
  • Wire with any visible movement or gap at the solder point where it meets the case body
  • Wire gauge or finish inconsistent with the case steel quality
  • Strap attachment that threads through the wire and sits off-center -- correct wire lug geometry keeps the strap centered
Crown (no bridge)

Original: The Radiomir uses a traditional screw-down crown without the Luminor bridge. The crown is larger in diameter than a standard dress watch crown but has no bridge or lever over it. This is architecturally correct; the absence of the bridge is the defining Radiomir tell.

Replacement tells
  • Any crown-protecting lever or bridge on a stated Radiomir -- this would make the watch a Luminor, not a Radiomir
  • Crown that does not screw down -- the Radiomir uses a screw-down crown for water resistance despite having no bridge
  • Crown with Panerai logo at incorrect scale or wrong logo generation for the production era
Sandwich dial

Original: Two-layer construction. The aperture cuts through the top plate reveal the lume substrate below. On the Radiomir 1940 family, the dial proportions are designed for the larger 47mm case and the numerals are proportionally larger than on the Due.

Replacement tells
  • Flat-printed numerals without depth under loupe -- indicates a replica or replacement dial
  • Numeral proportions that look too small for the case diameter, suggesting a dial from a smaller Panerai reference
  • Lume substrate aging character that is inconsistent with the stated production era
P.3001 caliber

Original: Cal. P.3001 is a manual-wind in-house Panerai caliber with small seconds and power reserve display, beating at 21,600bph with a 72-hour reserve. The movement should be signed and finished to Panerai manufacture standards.

Replacement tells
  • Movement visible through the caseback with automatic rotor -- P.3001 is manual-wind
  • Movement with bridge layout inconsistent with Cal. P.3001 documentation
  • Caliber designation on dial inconsistent with P.3001 for the stated reference

Case back markings

toggle
PAM00662 production
  • Solid caseback with engraved "PANERAI" text and reference PAM00662
  • "RADIOMIR" on the caseback
  • Serial number on the case band
  • "SWISS MADE" engraved on the caseback
  • Water resistance rating: 10 ATM / 100M

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. P.3001 is manual-wind at 21,600bph with a 72-hour power reserve. A fully wound PAM00662 that stops in under 60 hours warrants inspection.
  • The power reserve indicator, if visible, should advance smoothly as the watch winds down. Erratic indicator movement indicates worn or displaced indicator mechanism.
  • Cal. P.3001 is Panerai in-house manufacture. The movement plates and bridges should be signed and show consistent brushed finishing. Any movement with outsourced caliber geometry is not original.
  • The screw-down crown without a lever should engage with positive thread engagement and seal correctly. A crown that cannot be screwed fully home indicates a worn or damaged stem or crown tube.
