Authentication

Single-pusher chronograph; the start-stop-reset sequence in order is the functional verification.

Known issues in the market
  • The monopusher sequence must be: first press starts, second stops, third resets; any deviation from this sequence indicates the chronograph mechanism needs service.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 1858 Monopusher uses a single pusher at 2 o'clock; pressing it sequentially starts, stops, and resets the chronograph. The MB M16.21 in-house movement and this single-pusher operation are the defining authentication anchors.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

The monopusher mechanism is complex and rarely replicated correctly; a fake showing two pushers is immediately identifiable.

  • Single pusher at 2 o'clock only; no cutout or pusher at 4 o'clock.
  • Three-state pusher cycling verified by operation.
  • Column wheel visible through caseback; Montblanc-signed rotor.

Service part flags

toggle
Single pusher

Original: One pusher at 2 o'clock; pressing sequentially: start, stop, reset. No second pusher at 4 o'clock.

Replacement tells
  • Two pushers (at 2 and 4 o'clock) indicate a standard two-pusher chronograph, not the Monopusher variant.
  • A pusher that only performs one function (start/stop without separate reset) is a non-standard operation for this caliber.
Column wheel

Original: The MB M16.21 uses a column-wheel mechanism; the wheel should be visible through the caseback on exhibition variants.

Replacement tells
  • A cam-and-lever mechanism in place of the column wheel indicates movement substitution.

Movement tells

toggle
  • The MB M16.21 is a Montblanc in-house monopusher column-wheel chronograph with 60-hour power reserve.
  • Monopusher mechanism: each press of the single pusher cycles through start, stop, reset; this three-state cycling is the functional authentication test.
  • A two-pusher modification or a movement with separate start/stop and reset pushers is not the original.
  • Column-wheel visible through the display caseback is the definitive movement check; Montblanc-signed rotor should accompany it.
